With some discussions and debates in sections of the local media on the decision of the NPF Legislature Party to elect a new leader to lead the government, the NPF Legislature Party has cited some of the reasons why it decided to change the leadership of TR Zeliang. In a release today, NPF Legislature Party spokesman Imkong L Imchen summed up some of the many reasons why TR Zeliang’s leadership has failed and why he has been voted out.
1. Even after sufficient time has been given to TR Zeliang, he has totally failed to provide efficient administration and run the affairs of the State government in an effective manner. The government has been faced with crisis after crisis and instability had become the order of the day.
2. Blatant and random appointment of elected members as advisers and chairmen of various government agencies by deviating from the rules of executive business and making a mockery of government norms and also undermining the elected members. 3. The disqualification of the BJP MLAs under his leadership has antagonized the BJP and the NDA government and it has burned the bridges that have been built between the NPF and the DAN government with the NDA for the past ten years. This animosity with the BJP and the NDA has adversely impacted the State in all areas.
4. The peace process has been put on the backburner by the present leadership and the political stand of the NPF has changed.
5. Wrong decisions and wrong policy with regard to the exploration of oil and natural resources has also adversely impacted the State especially the civil societies and the citizens of the State.
6. Incorporation of the NCP, which is not a pre-poll alliance of the DAN coalition into the DAN ministry, was done without the clearance of the DAN Coordination Committee and done in arbitrary manner.
7. Till date there has not been a single meeting of the DAN Coordination Committee and there has not been any cohesiveness within the DAN ever since the change of guard. Only after TR Zeliang had lost the support of the majority of the members was the DAN meeting called on 9th January, 2015.
The NPF Legislature Party said these are just some of the many failures of the present leadership and there are several more failures like financial mismanagement, corruption, etc.
It also issued a notice of information to the government machinery not to obey the order of the present government under TR Zeliang as it has become an unconstitutional government as it has lost the support and confidence of the majority. “We would like to make it clear to the government servants and bureaucrats not to clear files on the orders of the present government as it does not enjoy the support of the people any longer,” the release said. Any government official doing so would be responsible as responsibility would be fixed once a popular government takes over, it cautioned.
The NPF Legislature Party further demanded that the State’s law enforcing agencies under the Chief Secretary and the DGP to immediately release the elected members from the NPF president’s custody where they are being kept under forced confinement and under house arrest in Hotel Oriental Grand, Kohima.
It alleged that on Saturday evening, armed elements were sent to the residence of Torechu in Dimapur and they made a failed attempt to kidnap him from his house on the instance of TR Zeliang. But, fortunately due to the presence of his police security personnel he could not be abducted, it stated. “This is what the present illegal government has started resorting to. Such action is condemnable and a total undermining of the people’s mandate,” the NPF Legislature Party said.
It also said that it is felt imperative that president of the party Dr. Shurhozelie should have taken a neutral stand and tried to pacify and mediate between the warring legislators of the party so that no division was allowed and also should have taken the opportunity to further strengthen the party by bringing an amicable solution through reconciliation. It is utterly shocking that Dr. Shurhozelie has openly sided with the minority group led by TR Zeliang which is contrary to the constitution of the party and at the same time unbecoming of a president of a political party, it stated while accusing him of totally violating the sanctity of the norms of a democratic party. The majority of the NPF legislators feel intentionally and directly insulted by the actions of the president, the NPF Legislature Party said and added that instead of bringing unity and harmony in the party, he himself has committed breach of party discipline and is destroying the party.
“It is now crystal clear that the TR Zeliang campers have decided to take the support of the Congress and this is the very reason why they have decided to try to call a special session of the Assembly hoping to garner a majority with Congress assistance,” the NPF Legislature Party alleged. “However, as we have pointed out, the present political development is only a move to change the leadership of the NPF Legislature Party and not to change the government but Shri T.R. Zeliang’s move is a move to change the government and the composition of the DAN coalition which is a member of the NDA,” it further reminded.
