The Naga People’s Front (NPF) has emerged as second single largest party after ruling Indian National Congress(INC) in the Autonomous District Council (ADC) polls in Manipur as out of 144 seats across six ADCs where results were declared on Thursday. The NPF won as many as 43 seats which were closely led by INC with 46 seats.
INC which won 106 seats in last ADC polls, bagged maximum number of seats in Sadar Hills (17) followed by 11 in Chandel, 10 in Tamenglong, 5 in Churachandpur, 2 in Ukhrul and just 1 in Senapati.
On the other hand, NPF got 17 seats in Ukhrul followed by 11 in Senapati, 8 in Tamenglong, 5 in Chandel, 2 in Sadar Hills. But they could not get a single seat in Churachandpur ADC.
Though the counting of votes for the ADC polls of Chandel, Churachandpur, Sadar Hills, Senapati, Tamenglong and Ukhrul started since Wednesday, the final result was declared on Thursday.
The Bharatiya Janata Party which fielded around 120 candidates managed to get just 21 seats including 8 in Senapati, 5 in Tamenglong, 4 in Sadar hills, 2 in Chandel and 1 each in Churachandpur and Ukhrul ADCs.
The Independent candidates outnumbered BJP this time as a total of 34 Independent candidates were elected against 23 in the last ADC polls.
The State Election Commission conducted elections to the six ADCs having a total of 144 polling stations, 24 each in each ADCs of Senapati, Tamenglong, Churachandpur, Chandel, Ukhrul and Sadar Hills was held in just one phase on June 1 with repolling on June 4 and 6.
Altogether, 495 candidates are in the fray. 120 of them are BJP candidates, 91 INC, 82 NPF, 191 Independent candidates, 4 of JD(U) and 6 of Lok Jan Shakti Party.
