Dimapur, September 3 : Taking the affect of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) on the ‘day-to-day’ lives of the people, the Naga People’s Front (NPF) has taken up the matter during their Central Executive Council (CEC) meeting 'with utmost concern.' The NPF has iterated by a resolution the demand for revocation of the Act from the Naga areas.
The NPF's president, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, had on August 31 written a letter to the secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs informing him of the impact of the AFSPA imposed in Nagaland and other neighboring states. The people are being 'kept under fear psychosis for all these years,' it stated.
“Nagaland is now in peaceful atmosphere. Such Act, which creates fear to the innocent citizens, should be done away with at the earliest. Your office is, therefore, requested to initiate necessary steps for revocation of AFSPA from the entire Naga area at the earliest, for betterment of its citizens and to enable them to live in peace and harmony.” Dr Liezetsu stated.
Another letter addressed to the Nagaland chief minister vis-à-vis amendment of the Nagaland Municipal & Town Council Act and panel discussions on the Vision Document-2030, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezetsu reminded the former to take necessary action.
A press statement issued by the NPF's media unit also endorsed the decision of the cabinet approving 33% women reservation in municipal and town council elections. The CEC, meanwhile, has suggested that certain provisions of the Nagaland Municipal & Town Council Act be reviewed.
