Dimapur, Jan. 8: The Naga People’s Front and the Nagaland unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party has appealed to the civic organisations opposing municipal and town council elections “to pave way for smooth conduct of the polls.” The parties have appealed to them to and “allow nominations to be filed on the extended date that is on the 9th January, 2017.”
The media cell of the Chief Minister’s Office issued a press release on Sunday informing of an all-party meeting in Kohima.
In the backdrop of some tribal organisations in the state boycotting the polls to the municipal and town councils scheduled for February 1, Chief Minister TR Zeliang “emergently convened” an all-party meeting to “collect the voices of various political parties” in the state on the issue, the press release stated.
The meeting was convened at 5:00 PM on the 8th of January at his residential office in Kohima town, the note stated.
President of NPF Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu, Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha KG Kenye, NPF’s Working President Apong Pongener, the president of the BJP (Nagaland) Visasolie Lhoungu, and Medokul Sophie, the general secretary, and Moa Imchen, secretary, of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee, among others, attended the meeting, the note stated.
The Nagaland Home Minister Y Patton was also present.
“The attendees discussed how Article 243T of the Constitution of India relating to women reservation in local bodies did not affect article 371A,” the press release stated.
“At the end of the discussions, the NPF and the BJP decided to fervently appeal to the organisations opposed to the ULB (urban local bodies) polls to pave way for smooth conduct of the polls and also allow nominations to be filed on the extended date that is on the 9th January, 2017,” the chief minister stated.
