Dimapur, Feb. 9: In a press statement issued by Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) vice president, Khriedi Theünuo, stated that the attention of the NPCC was attracted towards the statements made by the Speaker of Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA), Chotisuh Sazo and also the Chief Minister T R Zeliang, claiming that the number of MLAs supporting the present leadership because of which there is no need for Zeliang to resign.
NPCC reminded the Speaker that the present imbroglio is neither an issue within the State Assembly nor a matter of the elected members of the House withdrawing support from Zeliang’s leadership. The NPCC said the Speaker should remember that the Naga people are demanding the resignation of the Chief Minister T R Zeliang on “moral ground” because of the immense turmoil caused to the general public without listening to the voice of the people.
The committee also stated that though the Speaker may have authorities over the elected members within the four walls of the Assembly but the functioning of the government is different and does not fall under the purview of the Assembly.
“It is obvious that the Chief Minister is chosen by the elected representatives but since they are elected by the people as representatives, the MLAs are answerable to the people. Moreover, in a democracy the Government is of the people, by the people and for the people and therefore it
NPCC further opined that the Speaker should not drag his good office into an imbroglio between the government and the people but remain neutral unless the matter is taken into the Assembly.
