The programme was graced by Nabam Tuki, MLA and former CM of Arunachal Pradesh. Addressing the programme, NPCC president, K Therie, recalled the heights and excesses of British imperialism leading to the formation of the INC in 1885 and the legacy we have inherited today. He also recalled the movements by Mahatma Gandhi including the Quit India Movement. Stating that Naga Hills did not participate in the movement of Indian Independence, he recalled the wisdom of our ancestors through which they visualised that Nagas cannot be a part of the Indian Union and have demanded to keep Nagas under the British empire as a colony or ‘leave us alone’ to determine for themselves as was in ancient times. He said the forerunners and founding members of Nagaland Pradesh Congress were responsible for the State that guarantees sovereign socialist, secular and democratic republic form of government. The objective, according to him was “securing to all citizens justice, social, economic and political, liberty of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship- equality of status and of opportunity.” “Congress has never deviated from the policy of non-violence in pursuing political solution and we shall continue to endeavour political solution through non-violence,” Therie said recalling the resolution taken by the Congress’ founding fathers and erstwhile NNO at Pfutsero in 1972 who resolved ‘to endeavour to solve the political problem through peaceful and constitutional means.’ Training his guns on the BJP for using the various government agencies like CBI, NIA and IT Department as “political vendetta armies” against their political opponents, Therie said the RSS and the BJP do not believe in the philosophy of democracy. Rather, he said they believe in the philosophy of rule of racial purity or communalism. RSS and BJP believe in one nation, one religion, one tax and one language called Hindutva, he said. Stating that the fight is not with Indians or Hindus or Muslims, Therie said the fight is against persecution of Christians and the distortion of fundamental rights provided in the Constitution. In an oblique reference to the recent political turmoil in the State, which saw multiple defections and change of chief minister four times in one term under the patronage of BJP and RSS, Therie said leaders at the national level have lost trust and confidence in the legislators from the NE states. He said only the Congress can bring back the honour and restore the respect for the Nagaland Legislative Assembly as the party is firmly guided standing on the principles and ideology of sovereign socialism, secularism, democracy and republic governance. Also adding that Congress alone is standing for the people of Nagaland, Therie concluded that the Congress will leave no stone unturned to achieve peace, sound economy and happiness for all through non-violent schemes of things. Addressing the programme, Nabam Tuki said people across the nation are insecure and in the grip of a fear psychosis with the youth being the most affected because of intolerance. He also said that today anyone opposing the Modi led BJP central government is being targeted through the various government agencies. Tuki said demonetisation and GST implementation are taking their toll on the common man with small businesses facing closure while employment is becoming scarce. Stating that though the nation is faced with multiple problems making the lives of the common man difficult and the present state of affairs plaguing the people of Nagaland, he said it is the right time for Congress men and women to come forward against the lack of performance and mis-governance of the government through teamwork. Saying that the present NPF’s fight is for power and money, Tuki said the Congress stands on principles and ideologies to secure all sections of people. He further asked all to support the NPCC to strengthen the party not only in Nagaland but across the NE. The welcome address was delivered by P Ayang Aonok, NPCC working president, and the vote of thanks was proposed by NPCC general secretary Jonathan Ao.
