Northeast insurgency down 71% in last decade — MHA report
The security situation in the northeastern states has improved substantially over the last decade, with a 71% reduction in insurgency incidents in 2023.

security situation in the northeastern states has improved substantially over
the last decade, with a 71% reduction in insurgency incidents in 2023. Also,
during this period, security force casualties have decreased by 60% and
civilian deaths by 82%.
- This was reported by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in
its annual report for 2024.
- The MHA report stated that the increase in
insurgency-related violence in 2023 and 2024 was primarily due to ethnic strife
in Manipur. According to the MHA’s data from the last decade, the highest
number of incidents, 824, was reported in 2014.
- In 2023, the NE reported 243 incidents, of which 187 were
from Manipur, followed by 35 incidents in Nagaland, 13 in Arunachal Pradesh,
and 8 in Assam. The remaining NE states reported no incidents.
- In 2024 (up to November), 266 incidents were reported, of
which 203 were from Manipur, 40 from Nagaland, 16 from Arunachal Pradesh, 6
from Assam, and 1 from Meghalaya. The remaining states reported no incidents.
- The highest number of extremists killed in 2023 and 2024 was
reported in Manipur, with 33 and 22 killed, respectively. This was followed by
Assam, with 4 and 3 extremists killed; Nagaland with 1 and 4; and Arunachal
Pradesh with 2 and 1.
- Manipur, according to the MHA report, accounted for about
77% of the total violent incidents in the NE region in 2023. The
counter-insurgency operations resulted in the killing of 33 insurgents, the
arrest of 184 insurgents, and the recovery of 49 weapons. Additionally, 80
cadres of insurgent outfits surrendered, along with 31 arms. The states of Sikkim
and Mizoram are reported to be free from insurgency.
