DIMAPUR — The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has commissioned the New Jalpaiguri (NJP) Trip Shed Siding, a development it said will improve operational efficiency and reduce congestion at one of the busiest railway hubs in the region.
According to a press release issued by NFR Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, the commissioning involved alteration of 59 routes, taking the total number of routes at NJP to 480. The railway authority stated that this enhancement will enable greater flexibility in train operations and smoother movement of trains through the station.
As part of the Non-Interlocking (NI) work, Line No. 4 Clear Standing Length has also been extended to full length. NFR said this will allow longer trains to be handled at the station, improve shunting operations and contribute to more effective yard management.

The release noted that the work was completed within a short timeframe, made possible by the cancellation and diversion of trains at New Jalpaiguri in recent days. “Such cancellations were necessary to carry out the large-scale route alterations and yard improvements,” it stated.
The authority maintained that the project will bring “substantial” long-term benefits, including improved punctuality, enhanced maintenance capacity and better readiness for expansion of services and freight movement.
Describing New Jalpaiguri as a key gateway to the Northeast, NFR underlined the station’s role in handling long-distance express trains, local passenger services and freight traffic. With the new infrastructure in place, it said the station is now better positioned to meet both current and future growth in traffic demand.
NFR added that the commissioning of the NJP Trip Shed Siding marks “a major step toward building a robust and efficient railway network” for the region and the country.
