North East judo championship underway in Manipur

Winners of the NE judo championship are seen after the prize distribution on the first day in Manipur on Friday.

Imphal: More than 200 judokas are participating at 1st Inspire Institute of Sports (IIS)-Sangai Cup North East Judo Championship which got underway at the Sports Authority of India, NE regional centre, Takyelpat, near Imphal on Friday.

Virender Vashist of Judo Federation of India; president of Manipur Judo Association (MJA), Bijoy Koijam; operational head of IIS, Tathagata Mukherjee; Dronacharya awardee and chief coach of IIS, Jiwan Sharma; head of sports science at IIS, Samuel Pullinger; and media in-charge at IIS, Shemanth, were present during the opening function of the championship.

A total of 100 judokas from Manipur, 16 from Arunachal Pradesh, 31 from Assam, 23 from Mizoram, 35 from Tripura, 24 from Meghalaya, and 3 from Nagaland are participating in the two-day competition.

On the first day of the competition, Assam bagged five medals including 3 silver and 2 bronze medals. The silver medal winners are Nidarshana (-57 kg), Khyamana Deori (-48 kg), and Mrigakshi (+57kg), while the two bronze medal winners are Jenisha Deori (-52 kg) and Dipjyoti Das (-40 kg).

The two-day competition is being hosted by Manipur Judo Association (MJA), informed two coaches of Assam judo team Md. Muktar Ahmed (male coach) and Joyshree Hazarika Deori (female coach).
