North East India Christian Council welcomes FCRA Bill referral to JPC

MOKOKCHUNG — The North East India Christian Council (NEICC) has welcomed the Centre’s decision to refer the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for detailed examination.

In a statement issued on Thursday, NEICC General Secretary Rev. Dr. Meyu Changkiri expressed the council’s gratitude to Union Home Minister Amit Shah for heeding concerns raised by the Christian community and other stakeholders.

He described the referral as an important and positive step that would allow the Bill to undergo further parliamentary scrutiny and consultation.

The NEICC expressed hope that the JPC would examine the proposed amendments objectively and comprehensively, take into account the views of affected stakeholders, and carefully consider their practical implications before finalising its recommendations.

The Christian community, it stated, remains committed to transparency, accountability and compliance with the law, while seeking a fair, proportionate and workable legal framework for institutions engaged in social service.

The NEICC also appreciated the leadership of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, thanking them for listening to public concerns and conveying them to the Union government.

It also thanked Members of Parliament and other public representatives who supported the matter, as well as church leaders, congregations and Christian communities across the Northeast, the rest of India and abroad for their prayers and solidarity.
