DIMAPUR — Hardening its stand against any move to lift liquor prohibition, the Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) on Saturday reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLTP) Act, 1989, and urged the state government to ensure its sincere, consistent and effective implementation.
The Baptist body issued a ‘press release’ containing simply the Resolution No. 2 it had adopted during its 89th annual council held in February this year at Tuensang.
In said resolution, the council stressed that the NLTP Act remains a crucial safeguard against the social, moral and public health consequences of alcohol abuse, and called upon the government to resist dilution of the law and strengthen enforcement mechanisms.

It also resolved to intensify substance abuse prevention initiatives through its network of churches across the state.
The resolution further stated that churches would also strengthen secondary prevention efforts by extending care, counseling, support and rehabilitation services to individuals and families affected by substance abuse.
The NBCC’s move comes ahead of the March 2 start of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly budget session.
