Dimapur, July 4: Naga National Council (NNC)/ Peoples Republic of Nagaland (PRN) has appealed to the State government to implement the Inner Line Permit (ILP) to rid of illegal activities prevailing in the State. Besides, it also urged the village/ colony GBs and chairmen, youth, students’ body and other related organisation to fight for ILP in order to protect the land and people.
NNC/PRN through its MIP questioned the inability of State government to implement ILP in Nagaland particularly in Dimapur city, the gateway to Nagaland. It expressed concern to see hundreds of new faces coming to Dimapur for doing business due to non implementation of ILP. It pointed out that prostitutions run openly in New Market besides other illegal activities due to non implementation of ILP in Dimapur.
Sensing the danger due to unregulated influx of outsiders which could adversely affect the demography of the State, it urged the Nagas to be ready for any eventualities which might occur in future due to non- Implement of ILP.Inner Line Permit (ILP) is an official travel document issued by the Government of India to allow inward travel of another citizen into a protected area for a limited period. It is obligatory for other citizens from outside states to obtain a permit for entering into the protected state. The document is an effort by the government to regulate movement to certain areas located near the international border of India.
It is an offshoot of the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulations, 1873, which protected ‘Crown’s interest’ in trade by prohibiting “British subjects” from entering into these “Protected Areas” (to prevent them from establishing any commercial venture that could rival the Crown’s agents). The word “British subjects” was replaced by Citizen of India in 1950. Despite the fact that the ILP was originally created by the British to safeguard their commercial interests, it continues to be used in India officially to protect tribal cultures in northeastern India.
There are different kinds of ILPs, one for tourists and others for people who intend to stay for long-term periods often for employment purposes.
NNC/PRN has cautioned to implement the ILP before it became too late to tackle the situation.
