Authorities have arrested a person on charges of ‘acting on behalf’ of the underground group NNC (“non-accordist”) in extorting from truck drivers in Kohima. The Kohima police issued a press release on Friday informed of the arrest.
On the night of March 19, the mobile unit and personnel of Sechu( Zubza) police station were undertaking patrolling duties along National Highway-2 when they saw a commotion at the Assam Oil Petrol pump located in Zubza, a few kilometers away from Kohima town. Accordingly, the police personnel went to the site for enquiry and during which, one person was spotted getting into a vehicle, a Tata Sumo (NL01/2834) and tried to flee from the scene. The police personnel caught hold of him and took him into police custody. The suspect was later identified as one Selongmong Sangtam, 33 years, Chungtor village of Tuensang district.
On preliminary investigation being conducted, the arrested person stated that, he was acting on the direction of one Atong, a new recruit of the NNC (non-Accordist) group as “tatar” and was trying to “ascertain whether the drivers have paid yearly tax to NNC (non-accordist).”
