Dimapur, December 6
Against the backdrop of political development, the Naga National Council (NNC) today asserted its position on Naga sovereignty and urged both India and Myanmar to boldly normalize their relationships with the Nagas.
“We expect them to act in a manner that will be worthy of them who understand from their own history what freedom and human dignity mean.”
The NNC said, “If India is not in a position to discuss Naga sovereignty, it is India’s problem inherited from the British. It is not a problem for the Nagas. It is not the Nagas, but India that has not been able to discuss sovereignty.”
On the Indo-Naga political talks, the NNC pointed out, “The 16-Point Agreement, the first Ceasefire of 1964 ending in the abrogation of the rounds of talks, the Revolutionary Government, the Shillong Accord, and now the next awaited settlement from the Framework Agreement, have revealed India’s inability to discuss sovereignty with the Nagas.”
On the ongoing political talks, the NNC said, “Whatever settlement the NSCN (IM) may be working out with the GoI, the negotiation terms are known only to the two parties and no other Nagas. NNC has nothing to do with the 18-year-long negotiation process. The Nagas, NSCN (IM) and the GoI know this fact.”
