DIMAPUR — Speaker
of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, Sharingain Longkumer, and the
Ex-Parliamentarians’ Association of Nagaland (Ex-Pan) have condoled the demise
of former minister, Mavil Khieya, who passed away on Saturday.
Mavil Khieya was first elected to the 7th Nagaland
Legislative Assembly from 14Southern
Angami -I Assembly Constituency on a Congress ticket and served as the minister
of Forest, Ecology, Environment and Wild Life Preservation, Publicity and
Tourism and Geology and Mining. He was again elected from the same constituency
to the 9th Nagaland Legislative Assembly as an independent candidate.
Longkumer stated that Khieya's bold and principled role as
the lone opposition member in the 9th Nagaland Legislative Assembly earned him
great respect and admiration from legislators, state officials, media personnel
and the public alike.
“His dedication to upholding the principles of democracy and
his unwavering commitment to serving the people will always be remembered,”
Longkumer added.
He has further conveyed condolence to the bereaved family
members.
In another statement, the Ex-Parliamentarians’ Association
of Nagaland (Ex-Pan) has condoled the demise of its senior member and former
minister, Mavil Khieya, who has been a member of the association since 2003 by
rendering invaluable advice.
It stated that Mavil had worked tirelessly for the welfare
and uplift of the Nagas in general, the Angamis and the people of Southen
Angami-I AC in particular. While lamenting the loss, the association has
conveyed condolence to the bereaved family members and prayed for peace of the
departed soul.
