DIMAPUR — A fact-finding team of Naga Journalists Union of Manipur (NJUM) has reported that the shooting of Hornbill TV journalist Dip Saikia was unintentional, with the accused later apologising and offering assistance for medical expenses.
According to the team, the alleged shooter, 26-year-old Reiveinii Ramai, had claimed that he was unaware of Saikia’s presence when he fired pellets from an airgun amid rainy and foggy conditions at Laii village on August 31.
Villagers reportedly learned of the incident only when Saikia was brought to the local primary health centre for first aid.
Ramai, now in custody, is said to have voluntarily gone to the PHC after learning of the injury, where he apologised to Saikia in the presence of village authorities and expressed willingness to support his treatment.

Police have registered an FIR (No. 02(08)2025) at Tungjoy Police Station under Section 109/117 of the IPC and Section 25(1C) of the Arms Act, it stated.
The NJUM acknowledged the prompt action of Senapati Police in detaining the accused.
While noting that the report is not a final verdict, the union stressed its responsibility to verify the story amid widespread social media claims and political overtones.
“But most paramount to NJUM has been the frequent harassment and attacks of individuals associated with the fourth estate. NJUM is also aware of the responsibility journalist is bound with—to tell the true story,” it stated.
It condemned the use of airguns in public areas, warning of their potential to cause serious harm, and called for a fair and just investigation to ensure accountability.
