
Dimapur, Jan. 3 (EMN): While lamenting on the gradual vanishing of varied cultural values of the forefathers which were held in high esteem, NPF legislator Kuzholuzo Nienu urged the students to preserve and promote the values of honesty and hospitality.
Speaking at the valedictory function of the Phek Students’ Union’s (PSU) 63rd general session-cum-cultural dance competition on December 30, Nienu urged the students to identify the ‘good and bad ones.’
“No doubt, preservation of culture occupied a prominent position. Yet, a time has come to identify the good and bad ones,” Azo said. He lamented that a good tradition like honesty and hospitality seemed to be fast disappearing. In this regard, he urged to put God first in all aspects of their lives to achieve their goal.
The two-day 63rd general session-cum-cultural dance competition of Phek Students’ Union (PSU) was held in Phek village on December 29 and 30 on the theme “Cultural identity in modern context.”
Speaking on the topic, Nienu stated that there is always room for improvement saying, “we must perpetually endeavor and strive to do better.”
PSU president Tuku Venuh acknowledged the pioneers of PSU. He stated that the union had undergone various changes, morally, socially, economically and politically over the last 63 years. Stating that “we live in a bewildering world and constantly confronted with various elements, new ideas and concepts, he urged the students not to be carried away but rather meet the challenges confidently.
He also congratulated the newly inducted PSU president Vepo Soho and other office bearers and further appealed the seniors, village leaders and other organisations to uphold and take the union to greater heights.
Kuzhoniecho Keyho, chairman of Phek village council, paid tribute to Huvekhuyi Keyho and thanked the family members for donating the trophy for the cultural dance competition. He expressed concern on the fast disappearing of culture and indigenous sports except for Naga wrestling. In this regard, he challenged the young generation to work for revival of the rich culture and traditions.
Sharing greetings, Wehiwu Mekrisuh, president of Losami Students’ Union (LSU), challenged the students to work for refinement and preservation of the culture. Stating that the culture stands in direct conflict with the rapidly advancing western culture he said, “Cultural development is impossible without education. Education create curiosity, new ideas and vision which are essential for human development and advancement.”
Meanwhile, Ketouzou Khel has emerged as the winner of the cultural dance competition and Old Town Khel as the runners-up.
Earlier, the cultural session was chaired by Venyi Soho, while Vesito Venuh, pastor of Phek Village Baptist Church, invoked God's blessings.
In the valedictory session, Dr. Zhokho Venuh, principal of Capital College of Higher Education Kohima, spoke on the topic “Adapting to the new education system.”
He highlighted the new system of education that has been inducted in the present system of education and further stated that ‘we are in the stage of transition.’
“The two year pandemic induced lockdown, which has compelled us to adopt the online mode of education which will soon become the norm of education,” he said.
The valedictory session was chaired by Tsipolii Vero and the session concluded with vote of thanks delivered by PSU finance secretary, Tsito Huire.
