Kohima, May 21 (EMN): Naga Hospital Authority, Kohima, (NHAK) had organised Continuing Medical Education (CME) on Alcoholic Liver Disease (ALD) and Pancreatitis on Saturday evening at Hotel Japfu, Kohima.
Dr. C Wathsutho Nyuthe, MD (Medicine), NHAK, speaking on the topic ‘Alcoholic Liver Disease,’ said alcoholics with associative Hepatitis C infection have the chance of developing complication to liver damage 25 times faster than those who are non- alcoholic. He said some patients, who have Hepatitis C but continue to drink, could develop severe damage to liver at the younger age and shortened their life span.
The doctor also highlighted that obesity might result in liver damage known as a non alcoholic fatty liver disease, where some people without drinking developed liver diseases because of the accumulation of the fats. He said that the excess fat in the body will also have excess fat in the liver and the present of fats in the liver is a risk factor for liver damage.
While Dr. Rosemary Thurr, MS (obstetrics and gynecology), who spoke on the topic ‘Alcohol use disorders in pregnancy,’ said there is no safety for those who used alcohol during pregnancy. She advised that pregnant women should not consume alcohol at all as it could result in defection at birth.
She mentioned some effects of drinking during pregnancy that could result in miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, small birth weight, Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD)
For those using alcohol during breastfeeding, she said any person who takes alcohol during the breastfeeding should wait for atleast 3 hours otherwise it could result in nutritional deficiency in the mother as well as the baby.
While stating that alcohol birth effects are totally irreversible, she said it is 100% preventable. She also sought promotional programmes to increase awareness of the dangers of drinking alcohol during pregnancy.
Other speakers included Dr. Mhashevisu Sothu, MS (Surgery) and Dr. Albert Thupitor, MD (Medicine). They spoke on pancreatitis and it root causes.
