Dimapur, Oct. 16 (EMN): In an effort towards delivering cleaner and greener environment, Northeast Frontier Railway has started harnessing solar power and replacement of traditional lighting with LED lights. An update from the NF Railways on Wednesday stated that each of the stations in the Northeast have been provided with 100% LED-lighting. In a remarkable achievement, Guwahati station became the first railway station in Northeast to be fully powered with grid connected solar power with commissioning of a 700 KWp solar plant in the year 2017. Already, roof mounted solar panels in various offices, station buildings, level crossing gates in Northeast are generating about 2428 KWp of solar power which enabled savings of about INR 2 crore from annual conventional energy bills, the update stated. It added that another 1043 KWp of solar power generating capacity is under installation. Apart from this about 4365 KWp of solar power is also planned for installation within short time. It exuded confidence that once all these are commissioned, the total solar power generation in NFR would reach nearly about 8000 KWp leading to generation of about 37 lakh units of clean and green electricity with savings of about INR 4.73 crore .
