Dimapur, April 5 (EMN): Crystal Dynamics on Tuesday announced that it is developing a new Tomb Raider game built on the unreleased Unreal Engine 5.

Two years after it was announced, Unreal Engine 5 is finally here. Epic Games has released its next-generation game engine during the State of Unreal 2022 event and a host of developers including Crystal Dynamics have announced their intention to build their games on the new game engine.

During the State of Unreal 2022 online event, developer Crystal Dynamics also confirmed that the company is building it's next Tomb Raider game on Unreal Engine 5 for PC and next-gen consoles.

"Crystal Dynamics is proud to be a part of the launch of Unreal Engine 5. This new engine translates into next level storytelling in gameplay experiences," said Tomb Raider franchise general manager Dallas Dickinson during the presentation. "And that’s why we are thrilled to announce today that we have just started development of our next Tomb Raider game powered by Unreal Engine 5."

"Our goal is to push the envelope of fidelity and to deliver the high-quality cinematic action/adventure experience that fans deserve from both Crystal Dynamics and the Tomb Raider franchise. We can’t wait to take this journey together."

Unreal Engine 5 features a number of improvements for developers including Lumen, "a fully dynamic global illumination solution" for more next-gen true-to-life lighting, and Nanite, a new virtualised micro-polygon geometry system, that gives developers the "ability to create games and experiences with massive amounts of geometric detail."

The official Tomb Raider Twitter handle wrote, "Crystal Dynamics is incredibly excited about the future of Unreal and how it will help us take our storytelling to the next level. That's why we're proud to announce that our next #tombraider game is being built on Unreal Engine 5!"
