Delhi court grants bail to AAP MLA
New Delhi, August 5 (IANS): Hours after an AAP legislator was remanded to judicial custody, a court here on Saturday granted bail to him in a case related to defacing public property. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ashu Garg granted bail to Aam Aadmi Party MLA from Delhi Cantonment Surender Singh on a surety bond of Rs 20,000. The court in the morning remanded Singh to judicial custody till August 17 for his non-appearance in the case despite repeated warrants. Singh is accused of putting up posters and hoardings as well as defacing public property in south Delhi in 2014.
FIR against two cops for instigating suicide
Ranchi, August 5 (IANS): An FIR has been lodged against two police officers for instigating a youth to commit suicide, police said on Saturday. According to police, the FIR was lodged on the statement of Suresh Kumar, the father of Shiva Kumar who committed suicide. The FIR has been lodged against Inspector Ajay Kumar, the in-charge of Chutia Police Station, and City Deputy Superintendent of Police Shambhu Singh. Shiva Kumar committed suicide on Thursday morning by hanging himself from a tree. A resident of Dhanbad district, had come to Ranchi for passport related work. His father claimed that he was abducted by someone. Shiva Kumar, who lodged a police complaint regarding his abduction, in his suicide note alleged that the two police officers had tortured and used foul language against him and his father. He had written a letter to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) regarding the mental torture by the police.
66 quintals of polythene bags seized in Agra
Agra, August 5 (IANS): A team of Agra Municipal Corporation on Friday seized 66 quintals of banned polythene bags from a transport company warehouse here, officials said. The officials said the consignments from Gujarat had come in two trucks to the warehouse in Freeganj area here. Of the lot, 34 quintals had been sold to local shopkeepers, and the remaining 66 quintals was about to be lifted. Warehouse manager Nand Kishore was arrested. Polythene bags under 20 microns are banned in Agra. Polythene bags are considered to be the chief pollutants that obstruct drains, choke sewers and eventually find way into the Yamuna river.
India will gain 100% literacy in next 5 years: Javadekar
Jaipur, August 5 (IANS): Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar on Saturday claimed that India would achieve 100 per cent literacy rate within the next five years. “There was a literacy rate of 18 per cent in the post independence era. Today it has gone up to 80 per cent and I guarantee that within next five years, it will be 100 per cent. There will be no illiteracy in the country,” he said here while speaking at the ‘Festival of Education’ organised by the Rajasthan government along with education provider GEMS Education. The Minister emphasised that education was not just the ability to read and write but also gain a huge amount of knowledge. “Our priority is to improve the quality of education. The purpose of education is not just employment but it is important to become good human being,” Javadekar added. The two-day festival at the Jaipur Exhibition and Convocation Centre will end on Saturday.
: Two persons were arrested for allegedly being involved in manufacturing fake medicines in a factory at Rishra in West Bengal’s Hooghly district, police said on Saturday. “Acting on a tip-off, we have found a factory where fake medicines were manufactured. The unit was apparently a factory manufacturing vermillion and alta (Red liquid dye which women apply on their hands and feet during festivals and weddings),” the police said. Mostly, over-the-counter medicines which one can buy without a prescription were manufactured at the unit, the official said. “In apprehension of fake medicines being distributed to neighbouring districts, we have informed the competent authority (State Drug Control Authority) so that they can take the matter forward,” the official said.
The Odisha government has decided to open 30 new courts for speedy disposal of pending cases, Law Minister Pratap Jena said on Saturday.He said 30 civil judge (junior division) courts and Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) courts would be established in the state following the direction of the Orissa High Court. The state government will create 330 posts across categories for the courts, he added. Three civil judge (senior division) courts would be opened in Talcher, Chandikhol and Sohela for which 33 different posts have been created. While the High Court has recommended opening 31 rural courts in the state, 16 have been established while the government has taken a decision to open six new rural courts. The six courts would be set up in the districts of Jajpur, Sundargarh, Puri, Gajapati, Dhenkanal and Kandhamal, Jena said.
Two women pilgrims were killed and 22 others injured, seven of them seriously, in a head on collision between a truck and a mini-truck near Nangal village in Sirsa on Rupnagar-Nangal road here today, police said. The incident occurred when the mini-truck, carrying pilgrims, was on its way from Delhi to Dera Baba Badbhag Singh in Una district of Himachal Pradesh, they said. The other truck coming from Nangal on way to Rupnagar collided head on with it, they added. The deceased have been identified as Shobha Jain (52) of Uttam Nagar and Raj Rani (70) of Jagat Puri in Delhi, police said. The seriously injured persons were admitted to the PGIMER in Chandigarh, they said. The other injured were admitted to a civil hospital here, they added.
Government teachers and employees today staged a massive protest demonstration here,pressing for several of their demands, including implementation of the Seventh Pay Commission recommendations. Heeding to the ‘March to the Secretariat’ call of the Joint Action Committee of Tamil Nadu Teachers Organisations and Government Employees Organisations (JACTTO-GEO), thousands of employees turned up here at Chepauk. In a statement here, the employees body also demanded implementation of the Seventh Pay Commission recommendations on par with Central government employees and setting right pay anamolies. If the government does not call JACTTO-GEO for talks and come forward to implement the demands, an indefinite strike would be launched from September seven and a one-day token strike will be held on August 22, the employee’s body said.
