Weather dry in Bihar, Dehri records 42 degrees
Patna, April 15 (PTI): The weather in Bihar remained dry during the day with Dehri in Rohtas district being the hottest at 42 degrees c. Gaya recorded maxmimum temperature of 39.3 degree celsius, while in Patna it decreased to 34 degree celsius from yesterday’s 37.4 degrees. Bhagalpur recorded the maximum temperature of 34.7 degrees and Purnea 32 degrees, the met office here said.
More girl students to get admission in IITs from 2018
New Delhi, April 15 (PTI): More girl students would get admission in the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) from the 2018 academic session as the admission board today approved a quota of “supernumerary” seats for women. Concerned over the fall in the number of girl students getting admission to the IITs, the Joint Admission Board (JAB) had set up a panel last year, under the chairmanship of professor Timothy Gonsalves to find ways to improve the situation in the institutes, an HRD ministry official said.
Eight Karnataka students drown in sea off Maha coast
Vayri (Maharashtra), April 15 (PTI): Eight students of an engineering college from Karnataka, out on a picnic, drowned in the Arabian sea off the Vayri coast in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district on Saturday, the police said. The students from Maratha Engineering College in Belgaum had gone to swim in the sea, it said. The deceased, five boys and three girls, were part of a group of 47 students.
2 persons hit by train in Bally, dies
Howrah, April 15 (PTI): A woman and her seven-year-old daughter on Sunday died after being run over by a train while they were crossing the railway tracks at Bally station here, police said. The woman (32) and her daughter were hit by Goghat train when they were crossing the tracks. They have not yet been identified, they said, adding their bodies have been sent for post-mortem.
7 cops, one Naxal killed in prison van-truck collision
Muzaffarpur/Patna, April 15 (PTI): Seven policemen and a hardcore Naxal were killed when a prison van dashed into a truck in Bihar’s Sitamarhi district on Saturday. The van was carrying two hardcore Naxals from Bhagalpur to Sitamarhi court, he said. 12 policemen were also in the van. One Naxal and seven policemen died after the accident, he said, adding another ultra and five other policemen were admitted to Sri Krishna Memorial College and Hospital.
Two workers fall in STP, dead
Noida (UP), April 15 (PTI): Two persons died allegedly while working at a sewage treatment plant at sector 54 here, police said on Saturday. Mukund and Betwa were working at the STP last night when they fell into the oxidation pond, a police official said. Before they could be pulled out, they were dead, sector 24 SHO V P Singh said. The contractor has extended a financial compensation of Rs 10 lakh for their families.
A video has surfaced on the web, purportedly showing a pornographic clip being played on an LED screen at city’s busy Rajiv Chowk Metro Station, prompting DMRC to launch a probe into the matter. The 30-second-long amateur video has been circulating on social media. The ‘clip’ can be seen playing on one of the screens of a giant video wall, a grid of 12 LED screens. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), meanwhile, said it has launched a probe into the case, while the Delhi Police said it has not received any complaint yet.
Police on Saturday arrested a smuggler in Munger district and seized six Gupta period idols of Lord Buddha, Lord Mahavir and Gods Shiva Parvati valued at around Rs three crore in the international market. The idols had been stolen from Lakhisarai district and were to be sold to another smuggler in Munger, he said. The six idols are made of granite and four of them are of Lord Buddha. Each idol is valued at Rs 50 lakh in the international market and officials of the Archaeological Survey of India have been informed in this regard, the SP said.
The CPI-M on Saturday said it was outraged over the tying of a Kashmiri youth to a moving Army jeep as a shield against stone-pelters in Kashmir and demanded action against those responsible. “Though the Jammu Kashmir Chief Minister (Mehbooba Mufti) has announced an enquiry, but those responsible for this outrageous act of moving a Kashmiri youth tied to a jeep through 8-10 villages must be held accountable and punished,” the party said.
A day after a Punjab minister was seen fuming at a school principal, another purported video went viral on Saturday in which a Congress MLA is seen allegedly warning police officers to submit to demands of his followers or face consequences. Ramanjit Singh Sikki, the ruling party MLA from Khadoor Sahib, is seen in the video issuing a warning to police officials after which the opposition Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) attacked him. SAD demanded immediate action against the Congress legislator under relevant sections of the law for threatening a government official and preventing him from doing his duty in an impartial manner.
The Aam Aadmi Party’s Tamil Nadu wing on Saturday urged the Election Commission to “review” VK Sasikala’s position as the interim general secretary of the AIADMK even after her conviction in a disproportionate assets case. A delegation of the party submitted a memorandum to the EC, urging the poll watchdog to evaluate the constitutionality of Sasikala’s position in the ruling party in Tamil Nadu by taking into consideration the Supreme Court ruling in the Lily Thomas case. The delegation also questioned the constitutionality of leaders of various political parties continuing to occupy top positions even after their conviction in criminal cases.
