Bill to accord constitutional status to NCBC set for delay
New Delhi, April 11 (PTI): A bill to accord consitutional status to the National Commission for Backward Classes is set for a delay as the Opposition today blocked its consideration in the Rajya Sabha and insisted that it be sent to a Select Committee for proper scrutiny. The Opposition did not allow considertion of The National Commission for Backward Classes (Repeal) bill, which was passed by the Lok Sabha yesterday, despite the government requesting that it be passed “unanimously” in the interest of this section.
Broadband internet services restored in Kashmir
Srinagar, April 11 (PTI) : Broadband internet services were restored in Kashmir today, two days after they were suspended by authorities on the eve of the April 9 by-polls to Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency. The broadband internet services on landline were restored at around 4.30 pm today, giving much relief to subscribers in the valley. However, the internet services on mobile phones and data cards remain suspended.
Heat wave conditions in Odisha
Bhubaneswar, April 11 (IANS): Several parts of Odisha on Tuesday continued to reel under intense heat wave conditions with 10 places recording temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius. The state government has confirmed one death due to heatstroke. While Malkangiri recorded the highest temperature of 42.8 degrees Celsius, Bhubaneswar, the state capital, crossed the 40-degree Celsius-mark for the first time this year. It recorded 40.6 degrees Celsius, said a bulletin from the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre. Western Odisha towns of Bolangir and Titlagarh recorded 41.7 and 41.5 degrees, respectively.
HC rejects plea challenging validity of special status to J-K
New Delhi, April 11 (PTI): The Delhi High Court today rejected a plea challenging the validity of Article 370 of the Constitution giving special status to Jammu and Kashmir, saying nothing survives in it as the Supreme Court has already dismissed a petition on the issue. The order was passed by a bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice Jayant Nath. The court had reserved its verdict on the plea in March last year.
EC orders repoll in 38 polling stations in Kashmir
New Delhi, April 11 (PTI): The Election Commission today ordered repoll in 38 polling stations of the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency which witnessed large-scale violence during the by-election on Sunday. In a letter to the state Chief Electoral Officer, the Commission said it is ordering repoll based on the reports of the returning officers and observers. The repoll will be held on April 13.
No legal hurdle to constructing Ram temple: VHP
Ruling out any legal hurdle in building the Ram temple at the disputed site in Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya town, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Tuesday caleld for enactment of a law to facilitate the construction. “There is a provision where joint session of Parliament is called and bills are passed. I don’t think there is any legal hurdle. We have all faith in the present government... There can be a bill on Ram Mandir. It is their commitment also,” said Surendra Kumar Jain, VHP’s International Joint General Secretary.
As many as 16 persons have been arrested so far in connection with the alleged illegal transportation of cows and lynching of a man in Alwar district of Rajasthan, police said today. Eleven persons were arrested for illegal transportation of cows and five others were apprehended in connection with the lynching of 55-year-old Pehlu Khan, Investigating officer Parmal Gurjar said. He said all of them are under judicial custody.

Mayawati-led BSP today staged nationwide ‘virodh diwas’ (day of protest) against alleged tampering of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in the recently-held Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand Assembly elections “to benefit BJP.” Party cadres held demonstrations at all the 75 district headquarters in Uttar Pradesh and the party headquarters in other states to protest “murder of democracy”, a BSP spokesman said here.
The Uttar Pradesh government today said it was monitoring the situation arising out of Japanese Encephalitis in certain eastern districts of the state. Last year alone over 200 patients died in BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur where patients from neighbouring districts as well as from Nepal undergo treatment.
Malayalam will have to be taught compulsorily at all schools till Class 10 in the state irrespective of the syllabus, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told the media on Tuesday. An ordinance to this effect has already been inked by Kerala Governor P. Sathasivam.
