DIMAPUR — The newly constructed Fire Station South building in Kohima under Fire and Emergency Services was inaugurated alongside the launch of the ‘Modernisation of Nagaland Fire and Emergency Services-Management System (NFES-MS)’ on Wednesday.
The facilities were inaugurated by Advisor for Fire and Emergency Services, Home Guards, Civil Defence, and Relief and Rehabilitation S Kiusumew Yimchunger in the presence of Advisor for Geology and Mining and DUDA W Chingang Konyak and MLA Tseilhoutuo Rhütso, according to an update.
The programme was chaired by Neilasa Sopfii, Inspector General of the Fire and Emergency Services department, who highlighted in his introductory speech that the construction of the Fire Station South Kohima was executed under the Police Engineering Project with a total project cost of INR 3.53 crore.

He pointed out that the station was one of the oldest fire stations in Nagaland, and the present new building is expected to become one of the best fire stations in the Northeast.
The new Fire Station is a four-storey building and shall house four-bay garages for firefighting vehicles on the ground floor with all other necessary logistics facilities on the upper three floors.
He also mentioned that the new project, NFES-MS, is a pilot project for the initial three districts of Kohima, Mokokchung, and Dimapur.
The main objective of the project is the digital transformation of Fire and Emergency Services for improved efficiency, accessibility, accuracy, and transparency and to develop a centralised management system for Fire and Emergency Services, Nagaland.
A Citizen Web Portal (nfes.nagaland.gov.in) has been developed to provide online services to the citizens, which can be accessed for online recruitment processing, online payments, Fire NOC, feedback and grievances, geolocation of fire stations, and other department information.
Speaking on the occasion, Kiusumew stated that the department is coming up with modern firefighting equipment and is targeting setting up new fire stations across the state. With the launch of the modernisation system, the advisor was of the view that the department will now be equipped with data and real-time scenarios in firefighting, which can help in minimising the loss of lives and properties to a large extent.
Also speaking on the occasion, W Chingang Konyak urged the department to establish fire stations in ADC and EAC circles and at the village level.
Rhütso suggested the department use small water tenders and two-wheeler firefighting vehicles with fire extinguishing media.
He added that the department should have rainwater harvesting reservoirs in different localities in and around Kohima and also suggested that a dam be constructed along the stream of the Sanuorü river or stream under North Kohima for firefighting purposes.
