DIMAPUR — ‘Legacy,’
a collection of handmade bags and accessories by the brand Peren Touch was
launched on Sunday at the ongoing 10th Naga Loinloom Festival in Diezephe under
Chümoukedima.
According to Vitono Haralu, the collection was launched as a
dedication to her mother, Bano Haralu, all weavers of Nagaland, and the late
founders of Exotic Echo Society (EES) Sonnie Kath and Haiyile Kath Zhimomi.
Recalling her three year experience leading EES as
secretary, Haralu said she thought about what she would leave behind as she
leaves her post this year.
“That’s when I decided that I would create this collection
as a tangible testament of my work here and the dedication of the weavers.”
Peren Touch, started in 2020, focuses on handmade textiles,
food and handicrafts, and this collection was crafted using woven by the EES.
Leatherwork was incorporated into the collection to show the work of two
Liangmai and Rongmei leather workers based in Delhi, she explained.
She went on to say that the proceeds from the collection
would go towards further developing the collection. Haralu also expressed
gratitude to the EES and its weavers for trusting her to lead the society,
especially at a very crucial time.
“All these things were made possible because Exotic Echo
gave me the platform,” she added.
Launching the collection, special guest Viketuno Iralu Rio,
Director of The White Owl, noted that the Naga Loinloom Festival is one that
recognises not only the skills and creativity of the artisans but also the deep
cultural significance of the loinloom tradition.
Stating that the loinloom is more than a weaving technique
but also a story of identity, culture and sustainability, she said it “embodies
the values of patience, precision and perseverance which are deeply rooted in
our communities.”
“It reminds us of the importance of preserving our heritage
in a world that often rushes towards modernity. The intricate patterns and
vibrant designs woven into each piece speak volumes about the identity and
pride of the communities that create them,” she added.
She also commended Exotic Echo Society for their dedication
and vision in ensuring that the legacy of the loinloom continues to thrive.
This is not just an event, it is a movement to safeguard and promote a unique
cultural treasure, she said.
