Dimapur, July 24 (EMN): Union Home Minister, Amit Shah chaired a meeting to review the operation of the North Eastern Space Application Centre (Nesac) in Meghalaya on Saturday.
The meeting was attended by Union Minister of Culture, Tourism and Development of North East Region, G Kishan Reddy, Minister of State in the ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, B L Verma, MoS, Jitendra Singh, and chief ministers of Northeastern states.
Union Home Minister shared a tweet stating that he had chaired a meeting to review the operation of the North Eastern Space Application Centre (Nesac) in Umian, Meghalaya.
‘Nesac plays a key role in stimulating the overall growth of the Northeastern region by using space science and technology,’ he stated.
He also lauded the efforts and dedication of Team Nesac and assured them that the Modi-led central government was committed to providing advanced technological support to the region that can transform the lives of the people of Northeastern states.
He stated that NESAC has helped to address the unpredictability of Mother Nature through weather prediction and forecasting thunderstorms, lightning and providing early flood warning.
‘It provides urban planning support and states can leverage on this to assess traffic congestion, property encroachments and the mapping of utilities and assets’, he said.
He also tweeted, "Mapping of forest gap areas, expansion of the land area for horticulture development, identification and rejuvenation of wetlands, diversion of floodwater and assessment of Bamboo resources for livelihood needs are a few among many key ideas that were discussed during the meeting".
Speaking at the meeting, Kishan Reddy informed that between 2014 and 2021, the assets of Nesac almost tripled from INR 41.6 crore to INR 112 crore. Activities of Nesac are focused on the practical applications of space technology in agriculture and allied fields like silk farming, where it can help in early detection of diseases etc., a report stated.
Further, the Union Home Minister also inaugurated the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) in Shillong. ‘Connectivity in the NE states has always been the top priority of the NDA govt and this will further ease the people of Meghalaya and the neighbouring states,’ he stated.
Chief Minister of Nagaland, Neiphiu Rio also tweeted, "Participated at the 9th NESAC Society Meeting; Chaired by Shri @AmitShah ji Hon’ble Union Home Min. & Chairman @NEC_GOI. I hope strategies will be developed for NE states in using space technology tools for a sustainable economic growth & development in the North East region".
