DIMAPUR — In a landmark nationwide effort to improve newborn survival, the National Neonatology Forum India (NNF India) celebrated Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Day on Sunday by conducting large-scale hands-on skill training programmes across the country.
According to an update, the initiative is regarded as one of the largest synchronised healthcare training efforts ever undertaken in India.
The programme is being led under the leadership of Dr. Lallan Kumar Bharti with the objective of ensuring that every newborn receives timely and effective resuscitation support at birth.
The update stated that newborn mortality continues to remain a major public health challenge in India, with a significant proportion of neonatal deaths occurring due to a baby’s inability to establish breathing at birth.

It noted that the first few minutes after birth are critical and that timely intervention by trained healthcare providers can prevent many avoidable deaths. Simple, evidence-based skills to help babies breathe at birth can make the difference between life and death, it added.
Recognising the urgent need, the NNF India conceptualised and implemented the massive capacity-building initiative across the country. A total of 998 training courses are being conducted nationwide, involving nearly 20,000 healthcare providers.
The trainings are being held not only in metropolitan cities but also in rural and remote regions, including geographically challenging areas.
In Nagaland, the initiative is also being implemented to strengthen newborn care services in the state. Dr. Apong, Dr. Temjenpokba and Dr. Akumtoshi were present during the training session.
The training programme, attended by 20 participants, was held at Zion Hospital & Research Centre, Dimapur, with Dr. Akumtoshi serving as the course coordinator.
The update further stated that the hands-on trainings are being conducted free of cost and include healthcare workers from both government and private sectors to ensure wider reach and uniform strengthening of newborn care practices.
The NNF India has also played a key role in planning, coordination, standardisation and execution of the trainings across all centres to maintain quality and consistency.
The synchronised nationwide initiative is expected to set a record for conducting the highest number of neonatal resuscitation skill trainings in a single day, marking a significant milestone in India’s efforts to improve newborn survival, it added.
