Dimapur, April 26 (EMN): To spread publicity about the health hazards of tobacco, members of the North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR) in collaboration with the District Tobacco Control Cell (DTCC) has organised a flash mob declaring a statement against tobacco, at the Dimapur Railway station on April 24.
Speaking during the occasion, the principal of NEISSR Dr. Fr .CP Anto, stated “gratitude is the best attitude which will take to altitude.”
According to a survey that was stated to have been conducted by GATS, Fr. Anto said that around 57% of the Naga population are consumers of tobacco products. He has suggested that the enforcing authority of the state’s government, besides other organisations, work together to make Nagaland a tobacco-free state.
According to World Health Organisation, tobacco kills seven million people every year. Even children and youth are getting into the habit of consuming tobacco and drugs. Terming the consumption of tobacco as a serious social and health issue, he urged the community to together fight the menace ‘before it kills the children and youth.’
Also, the principal invited the people to take a pledge against tobacco, saying that the gesture would go a long way in creating awareness and reducing the number of deaths caused by tobacco. He urged the state’s government to control the tobacco market and to ‘help citizens live longer and work for sustainable development.’ To the citizens of the town, Dr. Anto urged them to ‘prevent the use of tobacco, to enhance life.’
