DIMAPUR — The North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR), Chümoukedima, observed World NGO Day on Friday at the institute.
In a press release, the NEISSR stated that the programme highlighted the vital contributions of non-governmental organisations in promoting social change and community development.
Dr. Toli H Kiba, Assistant Professor at NEISSR, delivered a comprehensive talk on the role of NGOs as key pillars of civil society working at the grassroots level.
She highlighted the 2026 International World NGO Day theme, “Restoring dignity through inclusion,” and explained how NGOs serve as a bridge between government services and marginalised communities, particularly in remote regions.

Dr. Kiba noted that across India and especially in Nagaland, NGOs play a crucial role in empowering vulnerable groups, providing essential services, advocating for the rights of marginalised communities, and responding to humanitarian crises.
She cited the example of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, which continues to provide humanitarian assistance during conflicts.
She also acknowledged transformative potential despite challenges faced by many NGOs, including financial constraints, restrictions related to Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) funding, irregular project support, sustainability concerns, and inconsistent operations among some organizations.
Encouraging future social workers to actively support the NGO sector, Dr. Toli urged trainees to contribute through sincere fieldwork, systematic documentation, financial mobilisation, active participation, and genuine appreciation of grassroots initiatives.
“The programme concluded with a renewed commitment among trainees to strengthen their engagement with NGOs and contribute to building inclusive and sustainable communities,” the release stated.
Earlier, the programme began with an opening address by MSW trainee Zuben N Tsanglao, who spoke on the significant role of NGOs in bridging societal gaps through everyday acts of service such as community teaching, cleanliness drives, and humanitarian relief efforts.
