DIMAPUR — North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR), Peace Centre, 7th Mile, Chümoukedima, celebrated its ninth graduation day on Friday at the Bishop Abraham Memorial Hall.
The event honoured the achievements of the MSW graduates with Dr. D Gnanadurai, Vice Chancellor of St. Joseph University, Chümoukedima, as the chief guest and M Rollan Lotha, Chief Operating Officer – Programme, NSRLM, as special guest, an update stated.
In his address, the Dr. Gnanadurai inspired graduates with a message focused on peace and environmental responsibility. He congratulated the graduating class and highlighted the expectations society holds for social workers - to turn theoretical knowledge into practical, transformative actions.
The chief guest urged graduates to cultivate a positive outlook and set high goals, emphasising the importance of humility and resilience, drawing inspiration from the life of Ratan Tata.
Dr. Gnanadurai stressed the role of social workers as peacemakers, encouraging them to reflect on global peace metrics, study peaceful societies, and apply those insights locally.
He further called on graduates to prioritise environmental conservation, urging them to consider the legacy they will leave for future generations.
M Rollan Lotha spoke on the role of social work in personal and community transformation. He stressed that being a good person is fundamental to the profession, encouraging graduates to maintain a continuous learning mindset and focus on making a difference in their communities.
Highlighting the government’s recognition of social work’s importance, he urged collaborations with government bodies and NGOs for campus recruitment, noting that these partnerships are valuable for advancing community development.
He also advocated the ‘Back to land’ initiative, proposing it as a solution to unemployment by reconnecting with traditional practices.
Lauding NEISSR’s social entrepreneurship specialisation, Lotha called for a shift from Nagaland’s salary-based economy to a more enterprise-driven approach, encouraging graduates to be enterprising in spirit and practice.
Dr. Fr. CP Anto, Principal of NEISSR, in his welcome speech, reflected on NEISSR's ten-year journey and the institution’s impact in transforming individuals to address society’s needs.
As Nagaland’s first MSW college and India’s first with a specialisation in peace and conflict transformation studies, NEISSR equips students as ‘social doctors’ to tackle social issues with knowledge, skills, and a commitment to peace and justice, he said.
He urged graduates to apply social work’s universal values, advocating for truth, peace, and justice in every context they encounter.
