DIMAPUR — As the Naga political issue continues to linger without closure, Chief Minister and President of Naga People’s Front (NPF) Neiphiu Rio asserted that only a regionally rooted party like the NPF can safeguard Naga identity while pushing for a meaningful solution.
An NPF press release on Saturday stated that Rio made the remark while addressing a consultative meeting of the NPF’s 11th Northern Angami Assembly Constituency at Chiephobozou, Kohima.
He asserted that the NPF remains uniquely rooted in Naga history and continues to act as a custodian of the community’s identity, culture and traditions.
Projecting the party as distinct from national outfits, Rio stated that the NPF speaks the truth about Naga history and has consistently produced leaders who serve the people with sincerity.

He said that his decision to align with and lead the party was guided by conviction, not personal interest. “If I were driven by self-interest, I would have joined another party,” he remarked.
Calling on party workers to strengthen the organisation, Rio urged collective efforts to take the NPF to “greater heights” and ensure tangible benefits for the people.
At the same time, he voiced concern over the prolonged delay in implementing agreements signed between Naga political groups and the government of India.
“Many agreements have been signed, but none have been implemented. Unless this changes, no solution will arrive,” he said, underlining that execution—not negotiation—remains the missing link in resolving the Naga political issue.
Rio also touched on the larger goal of Naga unity, stating that while physical integration remains elusive, the NPF is working towards political integration of Naga people across regions. He stressed the need for unity to ensure inclusive development and progress.
Echoing the chief minister’s views, NPF secretary general and MLA Achumbemo Kikon said that the party remains the most credible platform to safeguard Naga rights. He lauded Rio’s return to the party, describing it as a decision rooted in commitment rather than personal gain.
“If he wanted to earn money, he could have joined other parties, but joining NPF shows conviction for the Naga people,” Kikon said.
Highlighting the party’s grassroots approach, Kikon said that the NPF aims to preserve Naga identity while providing direction and leadership. He added that the merger of regional forces has brought “hope and healing” to Naga society, beyond political arithmetic.
Tracing the party’s legacy, Kikon said that the NPF has guided the Naga people for over six decades and was founded with the objective of securing an honourable, inclusive and acceptable solution to the Naga political issue. He stressed the need for concrete steps to translate that vision into reality.
