DIMAPUR — The Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) has reiterated its appeal for the peaceful and democratic elections of all ward members to the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC), as per the resolution adopted during its extraordinary councillors' general body meeting held on May 13, 2024.
In a press statement, it stated that almost all of the candidates running in the urban local body (ULB) elections have expressed a desire for ward development for the benefit of the people, which the NCD acknowledges.
At the same time, it maintained that various Naga political groups (NPG) and concerned residents of wards should ensure free and fair DMC polls on June 26.
It emphasised that no leaders of any organisations, individuals, politicians, or residents outside their jurisdiction of wards should interfere in the DMC elections in other wards with the intention of helping favoured candidates win through undemocratic and unlawful activities on polling day.
Any individual, group, or organisation interfering or creating problems in any other ward shall do so at their own risk and will be held responsible for any untoward incidents or situations, it said.
The NCD appealed to all peace-loving citizens, Dimapur-based civil society organisations, tribe hohos, the NPG, and concerned election candidates to uphold the sanctity of fair and free polls.
Furthermore, all councillors and members of the Dimapur Urban Council Chairman Federation (DUCCF), GB Union (Sadar) Dimapur, Naga Women Hoho Dimapur (NWHD), and Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) have been directed to remain vigilant in their respective wards for any untoward incidents.
They were instructed that anyone found engaging in unfair practices should be immediately reported to the competent authority.
The NCD also appealed to the district administration and law enforcement agencies to deploy sufficient security personnel to facilitate a free and fair election. It urged strict monitoring of individuals and anti-social elements coming from outside the wards to prevent any disturbances to the peaceful elections.
