DIMAPUR — The Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) has requested the government of Nagaland to construct the proposed 2.7 km two-lane by-pass road from Amar Flour Mill point near the inter-state check gate of Nagaland Police to Burma Camp in Dhansiri bridge, Dimapur, at the earliest to ease the harrowing experience of the commuters due to heavy traffic jam.

In a letter to the chief minister, submitted through the deputy commissioner of Dimapur, the NCD stated that the said stretch of road on the National Highway-29 (NH-29), which connects Numaligarh in Assam, Dimapur-Kohima and Imphal, passes through one of the busiest roads in the city along the Dimapur District Sports Complex Stadium (DDSC) and railway overbridge, thus causing “unbearable” traffic congestion till the 4-lane road in Purana Bazaar.

To ease the issue, the district administration and the Police department have been taking up several measures, including blockage of roads leading to the old railway overbridge and diverting vehicles to various connecting roads but to no avail, it said, adding that heavy traffic jams continued till 8-9 pm during the trial-run conducted by the Police department in April this year.

Maintaining that there is no scope for expanding the road in Dimapur, the NCD said the construction of the by-pass road, which the government is said to have acquired and demarcated the land for the project, will facilitate accessibility to all the buses entering the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT).

It went on to say that the proposed project, which is a dream and aspiration of the Dimapur people, should be taken up urgently for the safety and well-being of the citizens.
