Eighteen-year-old Imtijungla Pongen, who trumped 11860 fellow Arts students to top the table and secured the highest mark in Alternative English with 94, said she did not expect to be even in the Top 10. Neither did her two elder sisters and her mother, Tianungla Pongen.
But her teachers had expectations. So did her father, Ningsangwapa Pongen; he expected his daughter to feature in the Top 10, at least.
Her academic success is the outcome of spending six to seven hours a day in study. "I worked hard enough that God helped me with this blessing,” she said.
Imtijungla plans to take up Political Science as her subject.
Her mother said the only advice she gave to her daughter was not to compromise with her health while studying and to manage time properly. Her father said that, besides the daughter’s efforts, it was God’s blessing that made her to standout among so many students this year.

Another 18-year-old, Ananya Kumar Das outshone 2641 Science students by securing 94.60%, and also the highest marks in Biology with 96.
Son of Mahua and AK Das, his father is a Chemistry teacher at St. John Higher Secondary Residential School. He has been teaching there for the past 22 years.
Das aspires to be a doctor and he is preparing for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). A Top 4 rank holder in the HSLC exam, he was confident that he would be among the top 10 but not the numero uno.
His sister also secured the Top 1 rank in the Science stream in 2014 from the same school. Das said he balanced his time with his interest for cricket and photography even during his exam days and never feared for exams. He shared this simple mantra: "hard work never disappoints.”
His father said, 'my instinct was that he will be in Top 1 and even the late director of the school Temsurenla was confident of his securing Top 1. It is the shared efforts of the teachers and not his alone.’ He said that Nagaland’s education system was better than most other states as the state board has no forced making system, and is open to opinion and suggestions.
The commerce stream was owned by Suhana Begum from MGM Higher Secondary School. She secured the top position with total marks of 480 (96%). She also secured the highest mark in Business Studies with 97 and in Hindi with 93.

She said that she had only one thing on her mind: to make her parents proud through her performance in the exam. It was the trust and belief of her parents and teachers that motivated her, she said.
Begum singled out one teacher named Nimmi who, she said, helped her overcome depression and anxiety. “Being a student, I was depressed and overburdened with my studies. She was the one who made me overcome the obstacles,” she acknowledged.
Begum said she had no specific routine to study. “Everyone has a misconception about toppers having a routine. The truth is, when you have the interest in you, you will ultimately sit to study and you will do well. You need to push yourself to study.”
She has been studying in the same school for 14 years, from lower kindergarten to class 12. In 2017, she also secured Top 4 position in HSLC examination. “I am proud to say that I am leaving my school after a successful journey,” she maintained.
Begum aspires to be a chartered accountant and has applied for seat at the Aligarh Muslim University in Uttar Pradesh. “Only living for yourself is being selfish. You need to give your life to your parents, as they were the ones who gave you life. You need to understand the hard work they are doing and try to pay them back by working hard and scoring well.”
She also loves writing and painting.
