- DIPHU — A two-day
nature camp under Environment Education Programmee (EEP) for school children,
organised by tourism NGO Jakve Asong of Karbi Anglong, concluded on Saturday at
Bio-Diversity-cum-Recreation Park.
- The programmee is supported by the Ministry of Environment,
Forest and Climate Change, Govt. of India, and implemented by Assam Science
Technology & Environment Council of Science Technology and Climate Change
department.
- The main purpose of organising the nature camp, as informed
by the Eco-Club coordinator Ronardson Bey, was to learn how to be with nature.
- “Children should understand the beauty of nature, where
beautiful trees and mountains abound. There are different species of animals
and birds around and they should be protected,” Bey said.
- In the technical session, resource person Charne Beypi,
assistant English teacher of BM Shri Chandrasing Teron High School, spoke on
biodiversity and its conservation.
- Beypi explained to the children the various species of
plants, animals, and birds that inhabit our ecosystem. However, she noted that
due to environmental changes, several species of birds, animals, and plants are
facing extinction.
- She further emphasised how nature serves humans in different
ways and stressed the importance of protecting the animals and birds that
coexist with us, rather than harming them. Beypi encouraged the children to
appreciate and conserve the environment, allowing humans and nature to thrive
together.
- As part of the experience, the school children embarked on a
trek through the hillside, learning how to harmonise with nature.
- The camp benefited more than 100 students from various
schools in Diphu town.
- During the culmination programme on Saturday morning, Johny
Timung, the local Member of Autonomous Council (MAC) of Lumbajong, released the
'Nature Camp' T-shirt as a campaign for nature conservation. Later,
certificates were distributed to the participating school children and teachers
by Eco-Club coordinator Ronardson Bey, Jakve Asong president Diganta Engleng,
and secretary Nobin Timung.
