Nations should unite to save the planet

- Notwithstanding the fact that the World Economic Forum’s
Global Risks report has termed climate change as the second-most dangerous
security threat to humanity after armed conflicts, it’s a pity that more than
90 per cent of the nations have not renewed their pledge, made mandatory by the
Paris Pact, to save this beautiful planet from destruction even after the
expiry of stipulated five years. While only 12 countries have reaffirmed their
intentions to bring down the global temperature to the permissible level,
countries like the United States (US), United Kingdom (UK), Brazil and Japan
among others have refrained from doing so. The pathetic response from the big
and wealthy nations stands as a testimony to the fact that the world is sharply
divided in building climate resilience across national borders, without
realising that only being united mankind can survive nature's fury.
- How severe the climate problem is can be judged from the
fact that the latest edition of Global Climate Risk Index has claimed that more
than 9400 incidents of unexpected and unseasonal floods, heatwaves and cyclones
have taken place killing 7, 65, 000 people of all ages during the last three
decades (1993-2022). On the other hand, another think tank, German Watch has
calculated a loss of $4 trillion due to extreme weather conditions, since 2003
to the ongoing year. Here, it should be mentioned that India stands at sixth
place in the list of worst affected countries worldwide due to climate change.
Based on these figures, it can safely be remarked that lack of unity among
nations is adding fuel to one of the gravest crises that the planet is facing
since its inception. Clearly it’s time to work together to tame the climate
threat as early as possible so that no one feels threatened here.
- The worrying fact is that some of the developed nations
appear to be in no mood to cooperate with others to quell this impending
threat. Unfortunately the wealthiest nation of the world, the US leads this
pack of nations who want to put the entire burden of fighting the menace to the
poor nations. It is highly unreasonable for the US to withdraw itself from the
Paris Pact on the pretext that it would have to spend more than the other
nations if it stands by the said agreement, wilfully ignoring the fact that it
tops the list of per capita carbon emission by nations. As carbon emission is
one of the primary factors responsible for global warming, the US should be
courageous enough to face the reality, rather than trying to divert the global
attention towards some silly matters.
- So to tackle global warming successfully, all nations should
contribute their might in saving the world. The developed nations should be
generous enough in contributing to the climate fund. On their part, the poor
nations should not completely rely on freebies to counter the menace. These
nations should try to achieve as much carbon credit as possible by reducing
their emissions. This formula should be implemented properly to save the planet
from destruction.
