Dimapur, November 21: A three-day national seminar on Geology, Geochemistry, Tectonics, Energy and Mineral resources of Northeast India and annual general meeting of Indian Society of Applied Geochemists (ISAG), organized by department of Geology, Nagaland University, Kohima Campus has successfully concluded on November 19. The programme was supported by Nagaland University and funding agencies; DST, MoES, CSIR,AMD Government of India.
State governor and chief rector of Nagaland University P.B.Acharya graced the inaugural function. In his address the governor emphasized on the applied aspects of knowledge and its applicability to the societal needs.
Otherswho spoke on the occasion included, Prof. B.V Rao, convener of the seminar, Prof. G.T. Thong, HHOD Geology department, Dr.K.K. Dwivedi, president, Indian Society of Applied Geochemists, Hyderabad and Prof. Buno Legeise, administrative and academic in-charge, Kohima Campus of Nagaland University. Vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. S.K.Srivastava, organizing secretary of the seminar.
Technical sessions began with Keynote addresses by the eminent academics and professionals from various parts of India.The first day presentations were based on Sedimentology, Palaeontology and Stratigraphy andsecond day on two sub-themes; Energy Resources and Structural Geology, Tectonics and Ophiolites.
In the afternoon session, annual general body meeting of Indian ISAG was held, wherein awards instituted by the society were given to eminent scientists of the country for their outstanding contributions in the various fields of geology.
Third day technical sessions were dedicated to Geohazards and Geochemistry. Keynote speakers were Dr. V.Balram , Chief Scientist, NGRI ,Hyderabad and Prof. Ibotombi.
Speakers stressed on the need for an integrated approach to understand the complex geology of the region. They also underlined the danger of interpreting the observations on a smaller scale, not keeping the geodynamics of NE India in mind.
Valedictory function was graced by Prof. K.S.P.Rao, secretary of the society and editor of journal of ‘Applied Geochemists’ as chief guest. Short speeches were delivered by Prof.B.V.Rao, convener of the seminar, Dr.K.K.Dwivedi and participants. Seminar report was presented by Dr.S.K.Srivastava, organizing secretary.
More than 100 delegates from all over the country representing ministries, leading research institutions, universities and colleges attended the programme. More than 65 research papers were presented.
