Dimapur, Nov. 16 (EMN): A three day national seminar under the theme ‘Crop protection: Current trend and future perspective’ got underway on Nov. 16 at SASRD, Medziphema campus.
The seminar is being organised by the department of Plant Pathology, Entomology & Agronomy, SASRD: NU, Medziphema campus.
The chief guest for the inaugural programme, Vice Chancellor of Nagaland University Lumami Prof. Pardesi Lal, welcomed the galaxy of scientists and research scholars from across the country to Nagaland. He also expressed his gratitude to organisers for conducting this important seminar which is in need of the hour as it concurs with the Prime Minister’s vision of doubling the incomes and the welfare of farmers by the year 2022.
The vice chancellor said biotic and abiotic factors interrelated with the crop life determine the success of crop production.Sstrategies of crop protection are ever-evolving with the needs of various ages and societies, he added.
Prof. Lal opined that the fundamental role of scientists is to strive for integrated research and development in the agricultural sector. He also added that scientists have a moral responsibility to accept the challenge of developing effective mechanisms for management of crop protection and thus pave the way for achieving higher levels of research and technological advancements.
Dr. Robin Gogoi, FPSI, FISMPP, principal Scientist, Division of Plant Pathology, New Delhi in his keynote address highlighted on the issue of crop disease management approaches beyond current trend.
The goal of the address according to him was to sensitize the younger generation of scientists in the disciplines of crop protection and gave an erudite presentation on the topic. Emphasising on the importance of traditional methods, he said using it as the base, there is a need to blend in the conventional, unconventional and frontier technologies so that a synthesis of applicable technologies can be creatively innovated for sustainable management practices.
Petevilie Thepa, a progressive farmer from Siethekima village was a special guest at the inaugural function.
The Pro. Vice Chancellor, Prof. T Lanusosang, NU: SASRD delivered the welcome address, while Dr. N Tiameren Ao, convener of the seminar gave a short introduction on the sub themes of the national seminar. Prof. L. Daiho, advisor of the seminar invoked God’s blessings and EU choir and SASRD students presented special songs. A souvenir of the national seminar was also released by the chief guest.
Altogether more than 160 participants registered for the seminar comprising of faculty of Agricultural Universities, scientists from Agricultural Research institutes and research scholars from all states of Northeast India, West Bengal, Orissa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh.
The release informed that there will be 18 technical sessions comprising of 6 sub themes from plant pathology, entomology and agronomy disciplines which will be conducted simultaneously in 3 halls. Altogether there will be 89 oral presentations and 39 poster presentations and competition for best oral & poster presentations for students and research scholars.
The technical sessions will be graced by imminent lead speakers from renowned agricultural universities and agricultural research institutes from different parts of the country.
