Medal-winning sportspersons of Manipur at the recent 35th National Games held at Kerala condemned the inability of the state government to translate its promise to the players into action. It may be mentioned that shortly after the National Games, the state government welcomed the players in a felicitation function, where Chief Minister announced that his government will encourage the medal-winning players with cash incentives.A press meet was held in this regard today at the Manipur Press Club by the medal winners and coaches of various disciplines of the 35th National Games. Nameirakpam Roshan, a gold medallist in Wushu discipline at the major sporting event, told media persons that the government had announced that it will give incentives to the medal winning players and coaches. CM had announced that the government will reward all the gold medallists with 3 lakh rupees each, silver medallists with two silvers each, bronze medallists with one lakh each and all the coaches with fifty thousand rupees each. He also promised that the incentives will be delivered before April 15 this year.
N Roshan strongly condemned the silent nature of the government in this regard even though April 15 has already passed. Such false promises of the government and negligent act of the government are the major reason why the players of the state felt discouraged and affected in the medal tally of the state in major events such as the National Games, stated Roshan.
It may be reminded that Manipur showed a poor performance in the 35th National Games compared to the earlier outings of this event, winning only 22 golds, 21 silvers and 26 bronze medals, thereby securing a modest-seventh rank in the medal tally.
