Dimapur, Nov. 11 (EMN): An essay writing competition on the theme, "Importance of girl child education in Nagaland", was conducted in all the five sub-divisions of Phek district on the occasion of National Education Day on November 11
The programme was organised by Phek district administration in collaboration with District-Level Centre for Women (DLCW) - Mahila Shakti Kendra, under the aegis of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, informed an update received on Monday.
In Phek Sadar, the programme was held at Government Higher Secondary School Phek, where 23 girls from eight schools participated. Vilenuo Kapu, women welfare officer, District Level Centre for Women- Mahila Shakti Kendra, chaired the programme.
While speaking at the occasion, Zhoi Lohe, SDO (Civil) Phek, highlighted the importance of educating the girl child in our society by citing an African proverb: "If you educate a man you educate an individual. But if you educate a woman you educate the whole nation".
Rhotolu Khusoh and Azeno Soho of Christian Mission Higher Secondary School Phek won the first and second prizes respectively in the essay writing competition, while Neshelii Vero of Government Higher Secondary School Phek won third prize.
In Pfutsero sub-division, the essay competition was conducted at Government Higher Secondary School Pfutsero, where 21 girls from nine schools participated. The update also informed that for Chozuba sub-division, the programme was held at Government Higher Secondary School Chozuba, where nine girls from three schools participated.
In Chizami sub-division, the programme was conducted at Government Higher Secondary School Chizami, where 11 girls from four schools participated. In Meluri sub-division, the competition was held at Government Higher Secondary School Meluri with nine students from three schools participating.
The winners from all the five sub-divisions were awarded with cash prizes and a certificate. Consolation prizes were also given away to five participants.
Modern College Kohima
Modern College Kohima observed National Education Day by conducting several activities like essay competition and poem recitation in the college auditorium on November 11.
An update from the college informed that Deepali, (HoD) dept. of Education told the students on the importance of education and the significance of National Education Day.
The programme concluded with the principal of the institute Dr. HP Singh giving away the prizes to the winners of essay competition.
