'Modi meets Latvian PM
New Delhi, Nov. 3 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday met his Latvian counterpart Maris Kucinskis and held bilateral talks. “Strengthening the bonds of friendship. (Modi and Kucinskis) discussed wide range of bilateral issues,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted. Kumar quoted Modi as saying: “India and Latvia have strong potential for cooperation in higher education, IT, food processing, fisheries and allied sectors.” Earlier on Friday, Kucinskis attended the World Food India event inaugurated by Modi.
Modi meets Armenian President
New Delhi, Nov. 3 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday met Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and discussed ways to boost bilateral ties. “Reinvigorating age-old ties. PM @narendramodi meets President Serzh Sargsyan of Armenia, discusses ways to intensify cooperation,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted. Earlier on Friday, Sargsyan attended the World Food India event that Modi inaugurated. The Armenian President arrived here on Thursday on a three-day visit to India. India established with Armenia in 1992 following the breakup of the Soviet Union.
Himachal polls: PM, Rahul Gandhi have packed programmes
Shimla, Nov. 3 (PTI): With Assembly polls round the corner in Himachal Pradesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi have packed programmes in the state. Modi, who has already addressed two election meetings on November 2, would be there for two rallies at Rait (Kangra) and Sundernagar (Mandi) tomorrow, the BJP said. On November 5, the prime minister would address a rally each at Palampur, Kullu and Una, it said. While AICC president Sonia Gandhi would not campaign in the state, Rahul Gandhi would be there for rallies at Paonta Sahib, Nagrota and Chamba on November 6, an HPCC spokesperson said.
The Congress vice president would again visit Himachal on November 8 for three more poll meetings, he said.
Widow accuses landlord of rape, says Police
Noida, Nov. 3 (PTI): A widow has accused her landlord of raping her multiple times over the last one year, the police said today. An FIR in connection with the incident had been lodged, pursuant to a court order, they added. The victim had alleged that the accused -- Virendra alias Lala -- raped her several times over the last one year, the police said. The woman approached the police after she got pregnant, they said, adding that the accused was her landlord. Circle Officer Avnish Kumar said an FIR was lodged in this regard and a probe launched.
UP: Woman poisons her two kids, commits suicide
Sitapur (UP), Nov. 3 (PTI): A 35-year-old woman allegedly poisoned her two young children before committing suicide in Basura village here today, police said. Arti, consumed poison after giving it to her daughters, aged eight months and four years, they said. Arti lived with her husband and in-laws and was believed to be of mentally disturbed, police said. Investigation into the case was underway and the bodies were sent for post-mortem, they added.
Two soldiers and a militant were killed in a gunfight in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district, police said on Friday. The security forces launched a search operation on Thursday night in Samboora village near Pampore based on information about the presence of militants. “As the security forces came close to the hiding militants, they were fired at triggering the gunfight. “Two 50 Rashtriya Rifles soldiers succumbed to their injuries. One militant was killed while two others managed to escape,” the police added.
Morning fog and smog from stubble burning took its toll in Punjab on Friday when four people died after their car fell into a minor irrigation canal near Abohar town, around 310 km from here, police said. The victims included a middle-aged man and his two sons who had come from Hisar in neighbouring Haryana to attend a wedding in Rorianwali village near Abohar. The fourth victim had taken a lift in the car at the last moment, police said. Police investigations revealed that the car driver, who was injured in the accident, failed to see the minor canal near the Abohar bypass and the car fell into it.
An elderly man said to have mental health issues was stabbed to death by unidentified bike-borne assailants in south Delhi, police said on Friday.
Ram Lal, 60, was out for a walk near his home in Madangir locality when he was stabbed several times in his stomach and chest on Thursday night. A local resident tipped off police about the man who lay in a pool of blood on a street after the attack. A passer-by told police that two-three men attacked the man and escaped as he collapsed. Ram Lal succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
Police is scanning closed-circuit television footage from the area to identify the murderers.
Cases were filed on Friday against two Bihar government officials and four NGOs for misappropriating government funds to the tune of over Rs 13.50 crore meant for construction of toilets in the state capital, a senior official said. Patna District Magistrate Sanjay Agrawal said the FIR was lodged against the six a day after he ordered it. “FIR has been lodged against PHED (Public Health Engineering Department) Executive Engineer Binay Kumar, department accountant Biteshwar Prasad Singh and four NGOs - Adishakti Sewa Sansthan, Maa Sarveshwari Sewa Sansthan, Satyam Shivam Kala Kendra and Shiv Sewa Sansthan,” he said. According to officials, the scam under Lohiya Swachh Bihar Abhiyan during 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 was detected by district officials.
The Indian Army on Friday foiled an infiltration bid at the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district, an official said. The infiltration bid was foiled in Machil sector of Kupwara district, a defence spokesperson said in a statement, adding that one militant was killed during the gunfight and a search operation was still on in the area.
