Toxic tea kills four in Bihar
Patna, Nov. 2 (IANS): Four persons of a family died in a Bihar village on Thursday after consuming tea which was mistakenly laced with pesticide, police said. The incident took place in Noniya Tola village in Darbhanga district when pesticide meant for brinjal cultivation went into the tea, police officer Raj Narain Singh said. The dead included two children.
UP: Woman burnt alive for resisting rape
Badaun (UP), Nov. 2 (PTI): A 27-year-old woman was burnt alive allegedly by her brother-in-law at a village here after she resisted his attempt to rape her, the police said today. The incident took place last night when Neelam, a widow, was alone at her house in Labhari, they said, adding that she died on the spot. The police said that the woman’s father has lodged a complaint and a search has been launched to arrest the accused, Jitendra. He has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, they said.
Mulayam agrees to give voice sample in IPS officer threat case
Lucknow, Nov. 2 (IANS): Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav has finally agreed to provide his voice sample in the case filed by IPS officer Amitabh Thakur regarding an alleged threat given by him over mobile phone on July 10, 2015, police said on Thursday. Previously in his report submitted before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Lucknow, Mishra said that Mulayam Singh was not cooperating in the investigation. He said that he and his predecessor Awanish Mishra have sent notice to Mulayam Singh around dozen times through special messenger, registered post and Station Officer, Gautampalli but no one in his residence had received it so far.
Four-year-old boy dies after swallowing toy in snack pack
Amaravati, Nov. 2 (PTI): A miniature toy, kept in a snack pack to lure children into buying the packet, turned out to be fatal for a four-year-old boy who mistakenly swallowed it in Eluru town of Andhra Pradesh’s West Godavari district. Meesala Nireekshan, who unsuspectingly chewed and swallowed the plastic toy along with tomato rings in the packet at his home in Eluru last evening, choked to death, a police official said today. The boy was immediately rushed to the government hospital where he was declared brought dead, he said. The boy’s parents later filed a police complaint with the Two Town Police against the snack manufacturer, he said.
UP children fall ill; Principal suspended, FIR against food supplier
Bhadohi (UP), Nov. 2 (PTI): Nearly 100 children who were taken ill yesterday after eating biscuits at a residential school in Raya area here, today resumed classes, even as a team of doctors is keeping a constant watch on them. The school principal has been suspended and a case registered against the food supplier, District Magistrate Visakh G said. Chief medical officer (CMO) Satish Singh had said 45 children were in a serious condition, while the remaining 55 were kept under observation. All the children are in the age group of 10 to 14 years, he said. The district magistrate added that action will also be initiated against the district social welfare officer, as complaints of bad quality food had been coming for the past one year.
The Madhya Pradesh government will introduce Public Safety Bill in the upcoming winter session of the state legislative assembly that seek to award death penalty to those committing heinous crime against children. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan made this announcement here late last night while addressing a state-level function of Madhya Pradesh foundation day. He also alleged that confusion is being created over Bhavantar Bhugtan Yojana (price deficit financing scheme), which seeks to compensate farmers when prices fall below the MSP.
Two men bound for Singapore have been apprehended at the airport here for allegedly trying to smuggle out over one lakh US dollars clandestinely, the CISF said today. During the x-ray scanning of the baggages of the two, they said, a CISF officer detected suspicious images of laptop charger-like items and hence they were chosen for detailed frisking. “A total of USD 1,10,000 currency hidden in 11 power adaptors were recovered from the baggage of the two passengers. The two have been handed over to the Customs authorities for further investigation,” CISF spokesperson Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Hemendra Singh said at its headquarter in Delhi. The value of the seized US dollars is over Rs 72.43 lakh.
The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) today arrested N Pramod Kumar, the commissioner of Gudivada Municipality in Krishna district, while accepting a bribe of Rs 1.10 lakh in his office from a contractor, an official said. ACB Deputy Superintendent of Police SVV Prasad Rao told PTI that the commissioner had demanded over Rs one lakh for clearing the bills from a civic contractor. The bribe amount was later settled to Rs 1,10,000, he said. The contractor had approached the commissioner and lodged a complaint in this connection. Based on the complaint a trap was laid.
A militant was killed and a soldier critically injured in an ongoing gunfight between security forces and militants on Thursday in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district, police said. Police said security forces started a cordon and search operation in Samboora village near Pampore town in Pulwama on Thursday evening following intelligence inputs about the presence of militants there. “As the security forces closed on the hiding militants they were fired upon and retaliated, triggering the gunfight,” police said, adding two militants are reportedly hiding in the village. Exchange of fire was still on at 9 p.m., police said.
