Kerala Police arrest two more ‘IS recruiters’
Kannur (Kerala) Oct. 26 (IANS): The Kerala Police here on Thursday arrested two Muslim youths who are alleged to be the local recruiters for the Islamic State (IS) terror group. With this, the total number of arrests has reached five, with three being arrested on Wednesday by the police in Valapatanam. All five arrested had returned from Turkey not long ago, a police officer said. They hail from Chakarakal and nearby areas of Kannur. Their detailed interrogation is underway.
Two arrested in attack on Swiss couple
Lucknow/New Delhi, Oct. 26 (PTI): A young Swiss couple was attacked by a group of four youths in Agras Fatehpur Sikri in Uttar Pradesh, leaving them battered and bruised, after which two of them were arrested, police said today, as the incident sparked condemnation from the Centre and the state government. The attack took place on Sunday, police said, adding all the four assailants have been identified.
Delhi government likely to implement odd-even scheme again
New Delhi, Oct. 26 (IANS): With the air quality in Delhi and NCR getting worse ahead of winter, the city government has said it may bring back the odd-even vehicle rationing scheme in the capital. In a letter written on Wednesday, Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot directed the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) to gear up for implementation of the odd-even scheme -- under which private vehicles with odd registration numbers will be allowed to run on odd dates and those with even numbers will run on even dates. Weekends and public holidays are exempted from the vehicle rationing scheme.
AIIMS resident doctors on hunger strike
New Delhi, Oct. 26 (IANS): Over 2,000 resident doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) went on an indefinite hunger strike on Thursday demanding the recommendations of the 7th Central Pay Commission be implemented. In a unique move, the doctors will continue to perform their duties as they do not wish patient-care to suffer. Every day for one hour they will demonstrate at the premier institute’s gates Number 1 and 2, pressing for the implementation and continue to go without food. The Resident Doctor’s Association (RDA) of AIIMS has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda. However, there has been no response.
Everybody has right to practice own religion – Mamata
Kolkata, Oct. 26 (PTI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today said India stands for unity in diversity and each one of us has the right to practice his own religion. She was speaking at a function organised in Khidderpore on the occasion of Chhath festival. “India stands for unity in diversity, where everybody has the right to practice his or her religion and customs. I take part in all festivals, be it Durga Puja, Eid, Christmas or Chhath Puja,” Banerjee said, adding that she extended greetings to Rashtriya Janata Dal supremo Lalu Prasad today.
