Sr journalist, mother found dead in Mohali home
Mohali, Sep. 23 (PTI): Senior journalist K J Singh and his 92-year-old mother were found dead at their residence here, the police said today. Singh’s throat had been slit while his mother Gurcharan Kaur was suspected to have been strangled at their Phase 3B2 home, said an official spokesman of the Chief Minister’s Office. The Punjab Police has set up a Special Investigative Team (SIT) under the Inspector General (Crime) to probe the suspected murder, the spokesman said. Singh, who was in his sixties, was a former News Editor of the Indian Express, The Tribune and The Times of India in Chandigarh.
Noida car gang rape ‘victim’ now says ‘it never happened’
Noida/New Delhi, Sep. 23 (IANS): The reported gang rape of a 25-year-old woman in a moving car in Noida area on Friday evening turned out to be a hoax, with the woman giving in writing to police that the incident never took place, police said on Saturday. The 25-year-old had on Friday night claimed that she was abducted by two men in a Scorpio SUV near Noida’s Golf Course Metro Station at around 6.30 p.m and they took turns to rape her. “We’re looking into the reason why she made the rape allegation and will take action against her,” the officer said. Noida Rural Superintendent of Police (SP) Suniti said the woman later accepted that the incident did not take place and gave the same in writing to the police.
ED files chargesheet against Shabir Shah
New Delhi, Sep. 23 (IANS): The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday filed a chargesheet against Kashmiri separatist leader Shabir Shah and alleged hawala dealer Mohammad Aslam Wani in connection with an ongoing money laundering case. The agency filed the chargesheet in the court of Additional Sessions Judge Sidharth Sharma against the two accused persons under Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The court fixed the next date of hearing in the case till September 27 when the two accused, currently in judicial custody, would be presented before it through video-conferencing.
Indian sends 1,000 tonnes relief material for Rohingyas
New Delhi, Sep. 23 (IANS): India on Saturday despatched around 1,000 tonnes of relief material, which can cater for around 62,000 families, for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, an official statement said. The material was loaded on Indian Naval Ship Gharial, which will deliver it to Chittagong in Bangladesh where thousands of Rohinya refugees have come in from Myanmar. The relief material is in customised family packets, which contain essential items including rations, clothes and mosquito nets. Earlier, relief material was also sent to Bangladesh through Indian Air Force’s C-17 transport aircraft, to address the humanitarian crisis emanating from the big scale migration of Rohingya Muslims. According to UN, almost 430,000 Rohingyas have fled Myanmar and crossed to Bangladesh since August 25.
Rallies and counter rallies supporting and opposing the indefinite shutdown rocked Darjeeling hills today while the CID brought three arrested GJM leaders from Haryana to Kolkata. As the shutdown entered its 101st day, rallies of GJM leaders in support of the indefinite shutdown and separate state of Gorkhaland today came face to face at some places with processions led by expelled leader Binay Tamang faction demanding restoration of normalcy. The GJM and other hill parties also demanded that the Centre intervene and start the dialogue process considering the sentiments of the people of the hills. For the 14th day in a row, police along with the administration, appealed to the locals using public address system to open shops and restore normalcy in the hills. Internet services remain suspended in the hills since June 18. They were arrested yesterday at Gurugram for their alleged involvement in arson and violence in Darjeeling in June. They will be taken to Siliguri tomorrow to be produced in the court and the CID will seek their further remand.
