Social activist announces Rs 1L reward for Honeypreet’s arrest
Shahjahanpur (UP), Sep. 22 (PTI): A social activist has announced a cash reward of Rs one lakh for information on the jailed Gurmeet Ram Rahim’s adopted daughter Honeypreet Insan, who is on the run after the Dera head was convicted of rape. Fakirelal Bhojbal has started a dharna before the office of the district magistrate here demanding the arrest of Honeypreet. He has got her posters pasted in the city so that people could identify her.
Swine flu kills 87 in 83 days in MP
Bhopal, Sep. 22 (IANS): The death toll due to swine flu in Madhya Pradesh stands at 87 in 83 days (July 1 to September 21), even as 129 persons are being treated for the disease in different hospitals, officials said on Friday. Health Department Director K.L. Sahu added that 529 persons were found to be suffering from the H1N1 virus in the given period. All hospitals and clinics have formed separate wards for treatment of patients suffering from the disease.
Bhojpuri film actor Manoj Pandey arrested in rape case
Mumbai, Sep. 22 (PTI): Bhojpuri film actor Manoj Pandey has been arrested from Kalyan in Thane district for allegedly raping a 27-year-old singer-actress on the pretext of marrying her, a senior official said today. The woman, who said she was in a live-in relationship with Pandey (27), alleged that he had forced her to undergo an abortion in 2015 when she was two months pregnant, the police said. On the basis of a woman’s complaint, the accused was arrested last night from Kalyan in adjoining Thane district, where he was shooting for a film, the official said. Pandey has been booked for rape, exposure and abandonment of child under 12 years and criminal breach of trust, among other charges, the police said, adding further investigation into the matter is underway.
Eight arrested in connection with BJD councillor’s killing
Berhampur (Odisha), Sep. 22 (PTI): Odisha police today arrested eight persons for their alleged involvement in the killing of BJD councillor Laxmidutta Pradhan in Ganjam district. A group of men had on September 16 dragged Laxmidutta Pradhan (35), councillor of ward no. 6 in Chhatrapur Notified Area Council (NAC), out of his house and attacked him with sharp weapons, following which he succumbed to injuries in a hospital. The SP said CCTV footage obtained from the house of Pradhan helped the police to nab the accused. Enmity is suspected to be the cause of the killing, Singh added.
CBI arrests IT official for bribe
Mumbai, Sep. 22 (IANS): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said that it had on Friday arrested a Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax in Mumbai and two others in a bribery case. Apart from Swami, the agency has arrested two more persons - Prathmesh, a businessman and Kamlesh Shah, who was accepting the bribe on Swami’s behalf. According to CBI officials, Swami was giving undue favours to Prathmesh, who was giving bribes to the official’s accomplice in the form of gold worth Rs 3 crore. The official said searches were being carried out at three places in Mumbai and the three arrested will be produced in a court on Saturday.
Kerala Catholic priest Tom Uzhunnallil, who was rescued earlier this month from an undisclosed location in Yemen, will reach India on September 28 and meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi. According to the Catholic Church, after meeting Modi, he will fly to Bengaluru to spend a few days with the Salesians Congregation, to which he belongs, and will attend a bishops’ conference and share his experience with them. The priest was associated with the Missionaries of Charity, which was running an old age home in Aden, when he was abducted by terrorists last March. Despite the best of diplomatic efforts his release could not be obtained. The priest was finally released on September 12 with the help of Oman government’s intervention. He then flew to the Vatican on September 13 where he met with the Pope and has now decided to return to his home country.
