India’s oldest cinematographer Ramananda Sengupta dead
Kolkata, August 24 (IANS): Country’s oldest cinematographer Ramanda Sengupta, who worked with legends like Jean Renoir, Ritwik Ghatak and Mrinal Sen, died in Kolkata on Wednesday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said in a statement. Sengupta, 101, left behind his son. Born on May 8, 1916 in Dhaka, Sengupta studied in Santiniketan in his formative years and got his first break in 1938 when he joined Film Corporation of India in Kolkata (then Calcutta) as an assistant cameraman. His first film as a full-time cinematographer was in “Purbaraag” directed by Ardhendu Mukherjee in 1946. Sengupta worked behind the camera in over 70 films, including landmark ones like Shilpi, Nishithe, Bindur Chhele, Personal Assistant, Headmaster and Teen Bhubaner Pare.
Dacoits kill police sub-inspector
Lucknow, August 24 (IANS): Dacoits shot dead a police sub-inspector in Uttar Pradesh’s Chitrakoot district on Thursday, police said. A police team led by a Superintendent of Police went to a forested region in Manikpur area and ambushed a gang of bandits led by Babuli Kol. The dacoits fired back, killing Raipura SHO J.P. Singh. He sustained a bullet injury in his chest. He was rushed to a nearby hospital first and then shifted to Karvi where he died. Raju Kol, a bandit who carried a reward of Rs 10,000 on his head, was arrested. A search operation is on to nab many of the injured dacoits, a senior official said. Babuli Kol carries a cash reward of Rs 5.5 lakh on his head. According to reports, his close aide, Lavkesh Kol, also sustained injuries in the gun battle.
American ship USS Pearl Harbor arrives in India
New Delhi, August 24 (PTI): In its first visit to India, American Navy’s amphibious dock landing ship USS Pearl Harbor arrived in Goa today as part of defence cooperation between the two countries. USS Pearl Harbor is a Whidbey Island-class amphibious dock landing ship with a crew of over 700 sailors and marines. The 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), which is one of seven marine expeditionary units of the US Marine Corps, has also come to Goa as part of the trip. While in Goa, the ship’s sailors and marines will conduct exchanges with the Indian Navy’s marine commandos relating to amphibious warfare, the US embassy said in a statement. USS Pearl Harbor was launched on February 24, 1996, and commissioned on May 30th, 1998. The ship is based in San Diego, California.
Girl, 9, raped by minor friend in Delhi
New Delhi, August 24 (IANS): A nine-year-old girl was repeatedly raped by a minor friend, who was later apprehended from his residence in south Delhi, police said on Thursday. The incident came to light on Wednesday afternoon when the girl complained of pain in her abdomen. She later told her parents that she was being raped by her 13-year-old friend, who lives in the same neighbourhood, for many days. “The juvenile stays with his parents in a rented apartment in Govind Puri and studies in Class 7 in a government school. He was caught from his residence soon after the victim’s parents filed a complaint against him,” a police officer said.During investigation, it was found that the boy would enter the girl’s house on the pretext of playing with her after her parents would leave for work and then rape her, the officer said. “She has been admitted to Safdarjung Hospital and her statement will be recorded on Friday.” The boy has been sent to a juvenile home, police said.
