Gang busted, 779 mobile phones seized
Ghaziabad, July 18 (IANS): A gang which stole mobile phones or bought old ones and sold them as new after changing their IMEI numbers has been busted here, police said on Tuesday, adding they had seized 779 mobile telephones. When police raided their hideout, they found eight men engaged in changing the IMEI numbers. A gang member said they bought a software from Gaffar Market in Delhi for Rs 10,000 which can remove the IMEI number of any mobile phone except those of Apple and Blackberry and install new ones. Each such phone was then sold as new with a fresh and concocted IMEI number. The gang made Rs 7-8,000 on every phone sale.
Soldier kills officer on LoC over mobile phone row
Srinagar, July 18 (IANS): A soldier shot dead an Army Major on Tuesday following an altercation over the use of a mobile phone in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district, police said. Both the Army and police have launched an investigation. Major Shekhar Thapa of 8 Rashtriya Rifles was killed by a fellow soldier in Uri sector of the Line of Control (LoC) which divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan, the police said. A soldier who had been told not to use the mobile phone while on duty fired several shots at the officer, police sources added. Major Thapa died instantly. Some of the reasons cited for such incidents are long periods of separation from families, working under constant stress and lack of recreational facilities for the troopers.
Owaisi to move private member’s bill on mob violence
New Delhi, July 18 (IANS): AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi said on Tuesday he has given notice to introduce in the Lok Sabha a private member’s bill on mob violence. All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief also posted a letter from the Lok Sabha Secretariat acknowledging the receipt of his notice. Owaisi had also termed as mere lip service Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement condemning the violence by cow vigilantes. He alleged that ‘gorakshaks’ were getting help from the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Sangh Parivar. He said that responsibility to ensure rule of law lies with the government.
