A.K. Joti appointed new CEC
New Delhi, July 4 (IANS): Election Commissioner Achal Kumar Joti has been appointed the next Chief Election Commissioner, the Law Ministry said on Tuesday. Joti will assume office on July 6, the day the incumbent Nasim Zaidi demits office. Joti, a 1975-batch former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Gujarat cadre, will have a short tenure of only about six months since he is scheduled to retire in January 2018 on attaining the age of 65.
Militants killed in J&K gunfight rises to 3
Srinagar, July 4 (IANS): The body of a third slain militant has been recovered from a gunfight site in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district, police said here on Tuesday. The gunfight started on Monday morning in Bahmnoo village between the Army and militants. State and central police forces later joined the operation that continued through the day. Two militants were killed on Monday, while four soldiers were injured during the gunfight.
Minorities’ panel ‘satisfied’ with action in Ballabhgarh lynching
New Delhi, July 4 (IANS): The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) on Tuesday “expressed satisfaction” with the action taken by the district authorities and police in the June 22 lynching of 16-year-old Junaid Khan in Ballabhgarh. The commission had sought a report on the incident from Deputy Commissioner of Faridabad, which was discussed in a meeting of the NCM on Tuesday. The Government Railway Police on Monday announced a reward of Rs 2 lakh to anyone providing information on the identity of the accused.
Food officer caught taking bribe
Panna (Madhya Pradesh), July 4 (IANS): A junior food officer was caught red-handed taking Rs 20,000 bribe from a salesman for the verification of government ration shop in Panna district of Madhya Pradesh, police said. A team of special Police organization, Lokayukta, caught Naresh Arya while he was accepting the bribe. He was later left with an undertaking. A case was filed against Arya under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
