Yasin Malik arrested in Srinagar
Srinagar, June 24 (IANS): Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Yasin Malik was arrested by police here on Saturday. A spokesman of the JKLF said Malik was arrested from his residence in Maisuma area. Malik along with Hurriyat leaders Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umer Farooq has been spearheading the separatist resistance in the Kashmir Valley for over one year.
SIT to probe J&K cop lynching case, 3 more arrested
Srinagar, June 24 (IANS): A special investigation team (SIT) was formed on Saturday to expedite the probe into the lynching of Deputy Superintendent of Police Muhammad Ayub Pandit, even as three more persons were arrested, a Jammu and Kashmir Police spokesman said. Pandit was lynched by a mob here on Thursday night outside the Jamia Masjid while he was on duty. Director General of Police S.P. Vaid told reporters that 12 accused have been identified in the case, of whom five have been arrested and the rest would soon be nabbed.
Monsoon session of Parliament during July 17 - August 11
New Delhi, June 24 (PTI): The Monsoon Session of Parliament will commence from July 17, the day voting for the presidential election is slated to take place. The CCPA meeting, chaired by Home Minister Rajnath Singh, was held last evening after the NDA’s presidential nominee, Ram Nath Kovind, filed his nomination papers. Sources said the session, which usually commences in the last week of July, is set to be advanced this year due to the presidential polls.
Congress demands probe into Kerala priest’s death in Scotland
Alappuzha (Kerala) June 24 (IANS): Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala on Saturday wrote to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj asking for a probe into the death of a Kerala priest in Scotland. He asked Sushma Sawraj to take up the case of “the mysterious death of the young priest” with the Scottish authorities. Chennithala has requested the Minister to help bring Xavier’s body to his hometown near here. He said steps must be taken to ascertain the cause of death of the priest, who was earlier reported missing from his room and church.
5 STF troopers injured in gunfight with Maoists in Sukma
Raipur, June 24 (IANS): At least five Special Task Force (STF) troopers were injured in a gunfight with Maoists in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district on Saturday, police said. The STF troopers were patrolling an area of the Tundamarka forests in Chintagufa area when they came under fire from a group of Maoists. In the ensuing exchange of fire, five troopers were injured. Three of them are said to be in a serious condition. According to sources, the exchange of fire is still underway. Police officials estimate that the number of injured will increase.
CID seizes 270 rare species of turtle
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of West Bengal Police on Saturday arrested three persons from North 24 Parganas district and seized 270 rare species turtles from them, an official said. “The seizure happened from a private car in North 24 Parganas district’s Barasat at around 7.30 a.m.,” the official said.
Two unidentified men were killed and two injured on Saturday after a car ran over them as they were resting on a footpath in north Delhi, police said. The accident occurred around 12 p.m. near the Hanuman Mandir in the Kashmiri Gate area. The injured were shifted to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital here. Police said the cause of the accident was yet to be ascertained as the car driver -- since arrested -- was in shock and not in a condition to talk.
The BJP-led Maharashtra government today announced a major farm loan waiver scheme that will see debt of up to Rs 1.5 lakh per farmer being written off. The scheme, announced by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at a press meet here, involves Rs 34,000 crore of relief. Named after Maratha warrior king Shivaji Maharaj, the programme will benefit 89 lakh farmers and make 40 lakh agriculturists debt-free, Fadnavis said.
The CBI today arrested a former assistant director of the Enforcement Directorate for allegedly demanding a bribe from an accused in the National Rural Health Mission scam. N B Singh, who was posted in the Lucknow office of the ED, along with middleman Subhash was allegedly threatening to attach the properties of the accused. They were demanding a bribe of Rs 50 lakh to take a lenient view of the matter. A trap was laid by the CBI and the duo were arrested while allegedly taking Rs 4 lakh as a part payment of the bribe. Singh belonged to the Central Excise and Customs service and was posted with the ED. He was handling certain cases related the NRHM scam.
Three persons were injured when a car broke a police barricade here and allegedly tried to run over a police officer. The incident took place last night when a police team, including the SHO of Sector-29 police station, was patrolling near a shopping mall on M G Road here. “All the three injured have been admitted to Civil hospital and they are stated to be out of danger. The SHO also received minor injuries,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Deepak Saharan said.
Former Calcutta High Court judge C S Karnan, arrested for committing contempt of the Supreme Court, continued to be in hospital for the third day today though doctors treating him said his condition had improved a bit. According to a senior doctor at the state-run SSKM hospital, the 62-year-old former judge’s condition was “stable” and needed to be under observation for a few more days before being released from the hospital.
