Heatwave over several states; thunderstorm over Bihar, WB: IMD
New Delhi, April 16 (PTI): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave alert over Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana for the next 3 to 4 days. The department has also issued a thunderstorm warning over Bihar, West Bengal, Assam and Meghalaya. Thunderstorms accompanied by thunder squall are also “very likely” at isolated places over the north eastern states of Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura from April 16 to 18.
Pranab to honour freedom fighters
Patna, April 16 (IANS): Hundreds of freedom fighters from across the country started arriving here on Sunday to be honoured by President Pranab Mukherjee on Monday to mark the ongoing year-long centenary celebrations of the Champaran Satyagraha, officials said. According to Jha, freedom fighters from 19 states would be honoured by the President. In all, 2,972 freedom fighters from across the country, including Bihar, would be honoured. The year-long celebrations to mark the 100th year of Mahatma Gandhi’s first major resistance against British rule, popularly known as the Champaran Satyagraha, began last week in Bihar.
DMK-led parties’’ meet give TN bandh call over farm issues
Chennai, April 16 (PTI): A meeting of political parties chaired by DMK working president M K Stalin on Sunday decided to observe a state-wide bandh on April 25 in support of drought- hit Tamil Nadu farmers. The proposed shutdown is an attempt to urge the Centre and the state government to immediately act upon the demands of farmers and farm labourers protesting in various parts of the state and in Delhi.
Normal life hit due to separatists’’ strike in Kashmir
Srinagar, April 16 (PTI): Normal life was on Sunday affected in the Kashmir Valley due to a strike called by separatists to protest the killing of a 23-year-old man allegedly in firing by BSF jawans in Batamaloo area of the city. Shops, fuel stations and other business establishments were shut. Public transport was off the roads, but private cars, cabs and auto-rickshaws were seen plying in many areas. Business at the weekly flea market was also hit as vendors chose not to put up their stalls.
